New research nails structural evasion as being endemic among the powerful

Tax cheats have robbed Greece of some 11.2 billion euros, say Greek and American researchers who used bank records to analyse the likely tax evasion level.

The method is precisely the one used by private   banks to determine the real income of loan seekers. Surprise, surprise, this is more accurate than looking at tax records, often themselves falsified in the first place. The study concluded that the true income of the average Greek is about 1.92 times larger than the tax declaration.

The India Times – Barack Obama Calls Spanish Premier About Eurozone Crisis – 7 August 2012

MADRID: Spanish Prime Minister Mairano Rajoy spoke with US President Barack Obama on Monday in a telephone call regarding the eurozone crisis and the financial markets, their offices said.

Obama called Rajoy for a half-hour chat in which they “addressed the economic situation in Spain, in the European Union, and in the world,” according to a statement issued by the Spanish premier’s office.

They also discussed the situation on the financial markets, where nervous investors have driven up Spain’s borrowing costs to unsustainable levels over the long term, complicating the country’s ability to finance its debt.

Finland Could Leave The Eurozone Rather Than Pay Other Nations’ Debts, Says Jutta Urpilainen – 6 July 2012

Finland would consider leaving the eurozone rather than paying the debts of other countries in the currency bloc, Finnish Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen has said.

“Finland is committed to being a member of the eurozone, and we think that the euro is useful for Finland,” Ms Urpilainen told financial daily Kauppalehti, adding though that “Finland will not hang itself to the euro at any cost and we are prepared for all scenarios”. Continue reading

BBC News – Eurozone Agrees On Bank Recapitalisation – 29 June 2012

EU leaders have agreed to use the eurozone’s bailout fund to support struggling banks directly, without adding to government debt.

Speaking after 13 hours of talks in Brussels’, EU chief Herman van Rompuy also said a eurozone-wide supervisory body for banks would be created.

Officials said the plans could be finalised during July.
