The Kindness Kronicles – Being A Good Neighbour – 16 April 2012

On Sunday we began a new message series, one that a number of area churches are sharing at the same time.  A few years ago a group of pastors met with the mayor and asked what they could do to help with some of the recent issues surfacing in the city.  The mayor responded that really, the best he could think of was for us to be good neighbors.

Interesting – a city employee who is saying the same as Jesus did – Love your neighbor.  And so began the annual multi-congregation series on the Art Of Neighboring.  It’s been interesting to watch people take up the challenge of actually getting to know their neighbors, and better yet, develop real relationships.  It’s not just about someone “out there” – it’s knowing the person right next door to you.

So how well do you know your neighbors? Take this little poll:

~ I wave as I am pulling into my garage

~ I know their names

~ I know what they do for a living

~ We get together regularly for parties

~ I have neighbors?

Think of how many of your neighbors you know and at what level.  If you are checking off either the first answer or the last, maybe it’s time to get to know them.  It’s a known crime deterrent, it makes people feel welcome, and it just feels good to know you are known.  Try it out this week, this month.  I’ll bet you see a difference in your community before too long…

“While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many.” ~Lady Bird Johnson link to original article
