WASHINGTON – November 13 – Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) will hold a congressional briefing to examine the United States’ use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) abroad.
When: Friday, November 16, 2012
Time: 10:30 – 11:30 am EST
Location: 2253 Rayburn House Office Building
The Washington Post recently published a three part series on the plans of the Obama Administration to institutionalize the practice of targeted killing by unmanned drones abroad. More than ten years in, estimates suggest that our covert drones have killed more than 3000 people, including innocent women and children.
Yet the program has thus far been conducted with virtually no oversight from Congress or any judicial body. Congress has a responsibility to the American people to ensure that programs being conducted in our name include at least a minimum of transparency and accountability, and are in accordance with the law.
Presenters will include:
Professor James Cavallaro: The founding director of Stanford Law School’s International Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Clinic and expert on international human rights. He is a co-author of a recent groundbreaking report titled “Living Under Drones: Death, Injury and Trauma to Civilians From U.S. Drone Practices in Pakistan.”
Bob Naiman: Policy Director of Just Foreign Policy and participant in recent delegation trip to Pakistan.
Medea Benjamin: Cofounder of Global Exchange and Code Pink. Participant in a recent delegation trip to Pakistan.
