EuroNews – EU leaders Hold Talks With Business, Union Chiefs – 28 June 2013

europeanunionflagEuropean leaders are meeting with industry and trade union figures at this EU summit to discuss how to fight unemployment.

The new head of one of Europe’s top business groups cautiously welcomed plans to help jobless youths.

Emma Marcegaglia, Business Europe chief, said that a 6 billion euro fund was “not enough” but “a good start.”

“At the end, unemployment will be fought if we have growth,” she told euronews in an interview.

On Thursday, a compromise political agreement was found on the EU budget.

But it’s much lower than the one trillion euros that the European Commission wanted.

László Andor, EU Commissioner for employment , suggested that the new deal of around 960 billion euros would be bad for Europe.

“But we will need more resources, a lot more will be needed, and by cutting the budget and cutting cohesion policy, and cutting the social fund, we are not getting there,” he said.

The heads of state and government are already unpopular with some EU civil servants.

Officials at the EU council are striking during the two-day summit over plans to reform their pay and conditions.
