Egypt.com – Mubarak’s Last PM Backs Army’s Sisi For Egyptian President – 9 September 2013

Former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq says he will back army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for president in an election expected next year, adding to speculation that the man who led the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi could become head of state.

Shafiq, a former air force commander who came second in last years presidential election, said he would not run if Sisi did.

The comment suggests why, just months before the election, there are no declared candidates as politicians wait to see if Sisi is going to run before announcing their own intentions.

Sisi has said he does not seek authority though speculation he will run has mounted since he toppled the Muslim Brotherhoods Mursi from the presidency on July 3. Sisi is widely expected to win if he runs.

Vilnius: EU Foreign Ministers At Odds Over Syria – 9 September 2013

They have struggled at the G20 to speak with a common voice on Syria, now EU foreign ministers meeting in Lithuania are facing the same dilemma.

Cyprus is across the water from Syria and its foreign minister fears retaliation if there is a military strike.

“Cyprus and the British bases will not be used as a launching pad for any military operations,” said Ioannis Kasoulides, who is in Vilnius for the meeting.

The White House says it has no “irrefutable” evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad was behind the August gas attack in a Damascus suburb, but that a “strong common-sense test irrespective of the intelligence” suggests the government is responsible. (Lucas : So now we SUGGEST looking back maybe also at USA’s  own doing in delivering weapons that Assad and his government are still the guilty ones as that should be common-sense. I never have seen such a crooked and idiot reasoning. This is really something to puke over so sick. Who can be suggesting such crap. If there is NO evidence than that does not allow someone to suggest things are still true out of common-sense…… what a crap! Get those people out of office and immediately trial them for treason and attempted genocide.)

Reuters – Kerry : Syrian Handover Of All Chemical Arms Could Prevent Attack – 9 September 2013

(Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could avoid a military strike by turning over all his chemical weapons within a week but immediately made clear he was sure that would never happen.

When asked by a reporter whether there was anything Assad’s government could do or offer to stop any attack, Kerry said:

“Sure, he could turn over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week – turn it over, all of it without delay and allow the full and total accounting (of it) but he isn’t about to do it and it can’t be done.”
