The SEC Opens Up Its Speed-Trading Data Tap – 5 October 2013

One of the biggest insights to come out of the May 2010 Flash Crash—when the Dow Jones industrial average suddenly plunged almost 1,000 points, then quickly recovered—wasn’t just how automated the stock market had become, but how little visibility regulators had into it. While high-frequency traders had spent the previous decade building vast computer systems to suck up torrents of market data to feed into their trading algorithms, the Securities and Exchange Commission was stuck in the 20th century, hopelessly outgunned in their ability to track this new breed of computer traders.

Multiple Tornadoes In Northwest Iowa Damage Property – 5 October 2013

Storm system also brings flash flooding, hail, lightning

Houses and other buildings were damaged in several northwest Iowa towns where multiple tornadoes apparently touched down Friday night, according to initial reports from the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms with heavy rain affected much of the state, starting late Thursday and early Friday and delivering multiple rounds to some areas. In north-central Iowa, flash flooding was reported, and four people had to be rescued in Floyd after water flowed over a bridge they were traveling on, authorities said.

Phys.org – EU Plans Stiff Duties On Biodiesel – 5 October 2013

The EU plans to impose stiff taxes on Argentinian and Indonesian biodiesel imports for alleged trade dumping, industry players said on Friday.

According to Argentinian companies the Commission will seek to apply a permanent duty of 22 to 25 percent on Argentinian from the beginning of 2014.

Breaking: US Senator Ayotte Sued For Malfeasance – 5 October 2013

An upset tea party member has decided that in order to get the attention of one our public officials, he must sue her.

In the letter to US Senator Kelly Ayotte that accompanied the suit, Byron Wesley Olson of Nashua NH wrote “The only difference between you and all the rest of us is that you were elected to to our nation’s capital to represent We the People. So far you’ve fallen short of doing that job well. Hence I have filed a suit against you claiming malfeasance and nonfeasance.”

Further he stated, “You have taken money from outside our state.”

Improved surveillance, takedown of opposition websites for “illegal content” and paid pro-government commentators are among the increasingly sophisticated tools used by authorities to restrict internet freedom, a new report claims.

The 2013 Freedom on the Net report, compiled by non-profit Freedom House, says that 34 out of the 60 countries it surveyed suffered a falloff in internet freedom over the past year.
