Pay Depositors For Risk Due To Bank Losses – 26 October 2013

Irish examiner

There is a great book on marketing titled The Long Tail, which stresses that instead of trying to hit millions of customers at once, it’s perhaps better to do millions of niches. Replete with examples, it was and remains a deserved hit. The “long tail” refers to the distribution of something — a large bulk at one end, quickly trailing off to smaller numbers but which go on for a long time.

By Brian Lucey

Another word for this is skewness. In many skewed distributions, it is common for the total amount in the long tail to be equal to or greater than in the bulk.

Saudi Threatens To Arrest Backers Of Women Drivers – 26 October 2013

Irish Examiner

Saudi officials stepped up warnings over plans by women to challenge the male-only driving rules in the ultraconservative kingdom, saying that even online support for the protest could bring arrest.

By Abdullah Al-Shihri Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

The warnings came ahead of today’s planned protest by Saudi women activists who have obtained driver’s licences abroad. The internet has been a key tool in reaching out to international media and organising the demonstration, similar to one staged last year by a small group of women.

PoliticalVelCraft – Banker’s Dream: Dangerous Freedom vs. Peaceful Slavery – Bankers Going To Legalese Your Gold & Silver From You At The End Of The Day? – 26 October 2013

Political Vel Craft

The words above reflect a state of mind and disposition that has been expressed by philosophers and revolutionaries for thousands of years. It is not a novel or new concept, but it is a concept that seems to have been forgotten across much of these United States. The population has largely been domesticated and this is the primary reason why there has been such little pushback to the global oligarchs looting the landscape.

A pathetically large percentage of the population would rather not think, they’d prefer to be told what to believe. They would rather not have any risk in their lives, they’d prefer to have shiny gadgets handed to them. They would rather not explore the wonderful expansive world around them, they’d rather sit on the couch and watch television.

John Ward – The Saturday Essay : Rigid Neoliberal Faith Is Becoming Cross Between Mediaeval Catholic Theology And Soviet Truth-Bending – 26 October 2013

JohnWFive years and $35 trillion later, there remains not the remotest iota of doubt in the minds of those who caused, watched and puzzled over what happened in 2008. None of them wonder overmuch why we haven’t recovered in the West, and why we are still on course for disaster.

No anxieties about the imbalance of the British economy towards f**kwitted financial paper salamis. Continue reading

WakingTimes – Proposed Belo Monte Gold Mine Means More Devastation For Amazon & Indigenous People – 26 October 2013

waking_times_logo_6-5-12_1For years now the world has watched as native peoples of the Amazon along the Xingu river have battled against the government and corporate development of the Belo Monte Dam, a massive hydro-electric power station that will displace tens of thousands of indigenous people and destroy the natural eco-system along this important Amazon River tributary. The struggle to stop this development continues, as does construction, but now there is another a massive industrial development that threatens to bring even further devastation to the stunning biodiversity, ecology and ancient cultures in this part of the Amazon… Continue reading

The “scientific worldview” is immensely influential because the sciences have been so successful. No one can fail to be awed by their achievements, which touch all our lives through technologies and through modern medicine. Our intellectual world has been transformed through an immense expansion of our knowledge, down into the most microscopic particles of matter and out into the vastness of space, with hundreds of billions of galaxies in an ever-expanding universe.

Egypt.com – Egypt Military Officers Back Army Chief For President – 26 October 2013

Egypt.com

Anxious over months of turmoil in Egypt, military officers are pushing popular army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to run for president, after a 2011 popular uprising had inspired hopes for democratic change in a country long dominated by generals.

Sisi ousted Egypt’s first freely-elected president, Mohamed Morsy, the man who appointed him, in July after mass protests against the Islamist leader’s rule.

Since then Egypt, whose political transition has repeatedly stumbled, has been rocked by near-daily protests, bombings and clashes in which hundreds have died in the worst civil violence in the nation’s modern history.

Phys.org – Brazil Seeks UN Move vs. Electronic Surveillance – 26 October 2013

 Phys.org

Brazil said Friday it is working with other countries to draft a U.N. General Assembly resolution that would guarantee people’s privacy in electronic communications. That follows a series of reports of alleged U.S. eavesdropping on foreign leaders and others that has surprised and angered allies.

Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff has been especially outspoken. She even took the rare step of canceling a state visit to Washington after classified documents leaked by former National Security Agency analyst Edward Snowden showed that the NSA hacked the computer network of Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras and scooped up data on emails and telephone calls flowing through the country.
