NATO Starts Air Drills Close To Ukraine’s Borders – 11 March 2014

NATO has begun wargames in Poland as recently dispatched US jets are set to take part in the exercises. Poor weather has delayed naval maneuvers in the Black Sea, with the US saying both drills were planned before the outbreak of unrest in Ukraine.

The air drills began on Tuesday at the Lask Air Base in central Poland. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski was present as the exercises commenced, standing by as four Polish F-16s lifted off. A US Hercules transport plane landed with support staff, while at least 12 US F-16 fighter jets and 300 personnel are due to arrive by Thursday.

Komorowski, without directly naming Crimea, said “events to the east” provided a reason to protect military spending in an age of austerity.

ActivistPost – Oklahoma Senate Passes Bill To Authorize Gold And Silver As Legal Tender – 11 March 2014

Yesterday, the Oklahoma State Senate passed a bill that would legalize gold and silver as legal tender, moving the legislation on to the House for consideration. The vote was 37-4.

Senate Bill 862 (SB862), was introduced by Sen. Clark Jolley and Rep. Gary Banz, with cosponsorship from Sen. Natham Dahm. It reads, in part:

Gold and silver coins issued by the United States government are legal tender in the State of Oklahoma. No person may compel another person to tender or accept gold or silver coins that are issued by the United States government, except as agreed upon by contract.

If passed into law, Oklahoma would become the second state to recognize gold and silver as legal tender authorized for payments of debts and taxes. Last month, the Arizona senate also passed a similar bill by a vote of 18-12.

Currently all debts and taxes in Oklahoma and the rest of the United States are either paid with Federal Reserve Notes (dollars) which were authorized as legal tender by Congress, or with coins issued by the U.S. Treasury — very few of which have gold or silver in them.

David Stockman blasted the GSE-profiteers just last week but the manic run-up in the stocks of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has abruptly come to an end as the FT reports, the US Senate banking committee on Tuesday released a highly anticipated plan that would maintain government backing of mortgages but wind down the GSEs. Not a great day for Mr. Ackman – who owned 10% at last filing.

The bill will call for replacing Fannie and Freddie with a new system of federally insured mortgage securities in which private insurers would be required to take initial losses before any government guarantee would be triggered.

“We can’t come out of this with a shadow of doubt about the integrity of the Bank of England,” Governor Mark Carney told MPs this morning on the heels of the report, as we noted here, that found no collusion by the bank to manipulate FX rates. A senior BoE employee was told of “attempts to move the market” but “did not convey to [Monetary Policy Committee member Paul Fisher] that markets were being rigged,” and therefore was suspended. While many have called this “as bad as Libor” the BoE remains adamant of its lack of involvement but is still restructuring itself – adding that “it isn’t our job to go out hunting for rigging of markets.” Nope, just to ignore it, we presume. MPs were not impressed.

We are sure the great and good of the economic world will explain away this data with one word – “weather” but the 1.9% drop in Wholesale Sales is the largest in 5 years and aside from the financial crisis is the worst since 1993! This is also the biggest miss on record. Inventories rose more than expected (+0.6% vs +0.4% expectations) which could be a problem as the inventories/sales ratio surges to its highest in 11 months. Unsurprisingly, Autos saw the largest inventory build (+6.8% YoY).
