According to a new survey conducted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, genetically modified crops around the world are increasingly being found in food and animal feed. The FAO conducted the the first survey that looked at food and animal feed traded internationally and examined the amount of genetically modified crops present. Of the 193 FAO member countries, 75 answered questions about low levels of GM crops in the trade.

Russia May Revoke Fleet Hosting Deal With Ukraine, Demand $11 Bn Back – Medvedev – 21 March 2014

Russia may revoke a deal with Ukraine, which gave Kiev a considerable discount on gas in exchange for hosting the Russian Black Sea fleet. The Russian PM said this would oblige Kiev to return $11 billion which Russia paid to lease the bases.

The deal, which was signed in 2010 in Kharkov, extended permission to Russia to keep the Black Sea fleet at its base in Sevastopol for 25 years after 2017, when the current agreement was due to expire. In exchange Moscow offered Ukraine incentives, including a discount on the price of gas and a waiver for some payments to Russia.

“We started doing this [not requiring the payments from Ukraine – RT] immediately, even though the remaining time for hosting the base under the older document was quite long,” Medvedev pointed out. “So Ukraine in fact saved about $11 billion in unpaid payments while the budget of the Russian Federation sustained damages for the same amount.”

President Putin Mocks US Sanctions Vows Not To Retaliate – 21 March 2014

Vladimir Putin has mocked US sanctions imposed on Russia, saying he will open an account at US-sanctioned Rossiya Bank. During a meeting with the country’s senior security officials he added that he won’t introduce a visa regime with Ukraine.

Putin treated with irony the recent sanctions imposed on certain Russian lawmakers.

“Yes, these are those so-called ‘polite people in camouflage with guns’,” ironically said Putin hinting at Western accusations that Russian soldiers have taken bases in Crimea.

Because while the west is focused on day to day developments in Ukraine, and how to halt Russian expansion through appeasement (hardly a winning tactic as events in the 1930s demonstrated), Russia is once again thinking 3 steps ahead… and quite a few steps east.
