EU Policy To Blame For Ukraine Crisis – Ex-Chancellor Schroeder – 13 May 2014

RT logoGermany’s former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has blamed European Union policy for the current situation in Ukraine and urged the West to stop focusing on new sanctions against Russia.

In Schroeder’s opinion, the EU’s fundamental mistake – that subsequently led to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine – was its association policy, he said in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag published Sunday.

Brussels “ignored” Ukraine’s deep cultural division between traditionally pro-European western regions and Russia-leaning regions in the east, the former chancellor said.

Czech Republic Does Not Envisage NATO Troops On Its Soil – 13 May 2014

RT logoThe Czech defense minister says his country does not want to host foreign NATO troops on its soil, as part of plans to beef up the alliance’s eastern wing in light of the Ukraine crisis in contrast to some other eastern European countries like Poland.

Martin Stropinsky, the Czech defense minister, has said his country is not in favor of any foreign troops being based in his country, even though they would only come at Prague’s invitation, Reuters reports.

“We know well how any permanent stationing (of troops) is still a problem. I belong to a generation that experienced the 80,000 Soviet troops based here during the period of (post 1968) ‘normalization’ and it is still a bit of a psychological problem,” Stropinsky told Reuters in an interview.

Second MERS Case In US Confirmed In Orlando Hospital – 13 May 2014

RT logoThe second US case of a deadly Middle Eastern virus has been confirmed in Florida, according to federal and state health officials. Florida’s case of Middle East respiratory syndrome comes just days after the first patient was released from the hospital.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health announced the MERS case ten days after the first case was confirmed in Indiana. That infected patient was an unnamed healthcare worker who traveled from Saudi Arabia to Indiana.

The CDC and Florida Department of Health announced during a press conference Monday that the second patient is also a healthcare worker living and working in Saudi Arabia. The person was hospitalized in isolation in Orlando, Fla., during a visit with family. Officials said the patient flew from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to London, and began to feel unwell on that flight. The MERS victim then flew from London to Boston, arriving in the US on May 1, then flying through Atlanta before arriving in Orlando. The patient did not visit any theme parks in Orlando.

Nighttime Dreams May Be Controlled By Sleeper Through Electrical Current – 13 May 2014

RT logoA groundbreaking discovery may see sleeping people controlling their dreams, using electrical currents applied to the brain, according to a study published online in Nature Neuroscience.

The result is called “lucid dreaming,” meaning that the sleeper understands that he or she is dreaming and can control the plot.

Using electrical current on the brain allows the sleeper to induce brain waves of a specific frequency, which provokes the “lucid dreaming” – an intermediate stage between two forms of consciousness, as many psychologists put it.

France Refuses To Block Mistral Warship Deal With Russia – 13 May 2014

RT logoThe French government has said that it will go ahead with 1.2 billion euro ($1.6 billion) contract to supply Russia with two Mistral helicopter carriers because cancelling the deal would harm Paris more than Moscow.

In the wake of the crisis in Ukraine, the United States had been pressing France as well as Britain and Germany to take a tougher line against Russia and cancel the Mistral contract.

But France refuses to link the helicopter carrier deal to the US/EU debate over tougher sanctions against Russia.

Bundy Supporters Defy Feds By Riding ATVs In Off-Limits Utah Canyon – 13 May 2014

RT logoThe Bureau of Land Management is being taken to task again by Cliven Bundy supporters, this time by dozens of people on all-terrain vehicles in Utah. But on Saturday, the BLM stood down as the ATVs rode on land closed to motorized vehicles since 2007.

The ATV ride was organized by San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman, who said he was acting as a private citizen. He contends that Blanding, a town of 3,500 residents, have been trying to compromise with the BLM since the closure of Utah’s Recapture Canyon to motorized vehicles after two men illegally constructed a 7-mile-long, 4-foot-wide trail through the canyon. The trail — complete with bridges, berms and stiles — cut through Native American archaeological sites. The Pueblo tribe lived in the canyon until 800 years ago.

Mish/ Mike Shedlock – Separatists Ask Putin To Annex Donetsk Following Referendum; Sanction Hypocrisy And Warship Sales – 13 May 2014

MishMikeShedlockSeparatists in Donetsk claim a turnout of 74.9% in a referendum on self-determination with 89.7% voting in favor of self-rule.

Ukraine says turnout was 32%. I suspect the truth is somewhere in between but that’s a pretty wide gap. Even 32% turnout seems respectable given the circumstances.

The Ukrainian government claims the election was a farce and the US called it illegal. Nonetheless, Separatists Urge Russia to Annex Donetsk in Wake of Referendum. Continue reading

Ron Paul: Why Is US Involved In Ukraine? – 13 May 2014

RT logoThe United States is being hypocritical in its response to the armed clashes between Kiev and pro-Russian groups in eastern Ukraine, former Congressman Ron Paul wrote in a new column.

In the column, published by the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, the former libertarian lawmaker questioned the American role in the conflict unfolding in Ukraine, criticizing the US for blaming recent outbreaks of violence on Russian sympathizers rather than the Ukrainian military.

The column comes just a few days after the Ukrainian military killed about 20 people in Mariupol, where the country’s Interior Ministry claimed that pro-Russia militants attempted to seize the local police building. Residents in the area, meanwhile, stated that local police did not want to take orders from Kiev, and that sparked a response by the military that ended up engulfing outsiders who arrived in support of the officers.
