GMO Producers Should Be Punished As Terrorists, Russian MPs Saye – 15 May 2014

RT logoA draft law submitted to the Russian parliament seeks to impose punishment up to criminal prosecution to producers of genetically-modified organisms harmful to health or the environment.

The draft legislation submitted on Wednesday amends Russia’s law regulating GMOs and some other laws and provides for disciplinary action against individuals and firms, which produce or distribute harmful biotech products and government officials who fail to properly control them.

At worst, a criminal case may be launched against a company involved in introducing unsafe GMOs into Russia. Sponsors of the bill say that the punishment for such deeds should be comparable to the punishment allotted to terrorists, if the perpetrators act knowingly and hurt many people.

Russia Dumps 20% Of Its Treasury Holdings As Mystery “Belgium” Buyer Adds Another Whopping $40 Billion – 15 May 2014

ZeroHedgeBack in mid-March, there was a brief scare after the start of the Ukraine conflict, when Fed custody holdings plunged by a record $104.5 billion (if promptly bouncing back the following week), leading many to believe that Russia may have dumped its Treasurys, or at least change its bond custodian. We noted that we wouldn’t have a definitive answer until the May TIC number came out to know for sure how much Russia had sold, or if indeed, anything. Moments ago the May TIC numbers did come out, and as expected, Russia indeed dumped a record $26 billion, or some 20% of all of its holdings, bringing its post-March total to just over $100 billion – the lowest since the Lehman crisis.

Nationalist MP Seeks Media Restrictions On Russia’s Leading Search Engine – 15 May 2014

RT logoA representative of the Liberal Democratic Party holds that Russian internet search engine and news aggregator Yandex should be classified as ‘mass media’ and face all the restrictions that entails.

MP Andrey Lugovoy has addressed Russia’s Prosecutor General with an official request to check if Yandex’s activities fall under the Federal Law on Mass Media. The parliamentarian notes in his letter that the search site publishes various news and analytical reports from Russian and foreign media outlets, and this can be seen as the distribution of mass information. Therefore, he writes, the company becomes a major means of mass communication and must be subject to the same rules as every other mass media outlet in the country.

The politician told the business daily Kommersant that in his view there was no difference between a story published in a newspaper and the same story published on the ‘Yandex top news’ web page. Lugovoy added that even if the Prosecutor General rules that the search engine cannot be considered a mass media outlet, he would prepare changes to the law and ensure that all activities of Yandex remained within the legal framework.

Russia ‘Open’ To Gas Price Negotiations With Ukraine, If They Start To Repay Debt – 15 May 2014

RT logoRussia will continue gas price negotiations with Ukraine on the condition that the country begins to pay off its massive $3.5 billion debt to Gazprom, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told journalists on Wednesday.

Gazprom, Russia’s largest natural gas producer, has currently priced Ukrainian gas at $485 per 1,000 cubic meters, after canceling two discounts. Kiev is complaining that the new price doesn’t reflect market conditions and is politically motivated.

“Of course it is possible. It’s a question for negotiations,” the Prime Minister said in a question and answer session with reporters.
