Putin Welcomes Kiev’s Ceasefire, Calls For Urgent Dialogue With East – 21 June 2014

RT logoRussian President Vladimir Putin has welcomed the ceasefire announced by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko. However, for the plan to become “realistic,” Putin said both sides of the Ukrainian conflict must stop the fighting and sit down for talks.

Putin “supports” Poroshenko’s decision for a “cease fire in the south-eastern Ukraine, and his pronounced intention to take some concrete steps for achieving peaceful settlement,” a statement published on the Kremlin website said on Saturday.

With that, the Russian President notes the 15-point peace plan suggested by Poroshenko on Friday “will not be viable and realistic… without practical actions aimed at the start of the negotiations process.

3 Mn Affected By Deadly Floods In China – 21 June 2014

RT logoRainstorms and floods sweeping eastern and southern China since mid-June have left 14 people dead, four missing and up to 3 million people affected. The cost of the flooding is estimated at $250 million in one province alone.

China’s central Hunan Province was one of the worst hit, where seven people died. Also badly affected was Jiangxi province in the east where another five people lost their lives and in Guangxi Zhuang, an autonomous region in the south of the country, where another two people perished, China’s Xinhua news agency reports.

In Hunan a total of ten cities and 47 counties were affected by the rainstorms and 171,000 people have had to be relocated. The economic cost to the region is $251 million, with 122,700 hectares of crops damaged.

Irate Monks & Angry Unions: 1,000s Rally In London Against Govt Austerity – 21 June 2014

A “no more austerity” march is gearing up in the British capital and RT’s Sara Firth says tens of thousands have already come to demand an alternative to the “greed and selfishness” of the Con-Dem coalition.

The rally, which also includes a festival, was called by The People’s Assembly Against Austerity, an broad coalition of anti-government groups that embraces trade unions and other campaigners.

“Living standards continue to drop, forcing millions into poverty, yet the politicians remain addicted to austerity,” the rally’s web page said.

178 Barrels Of Oil Spill Into Colorado’s Only Designated Wild And Scenic River – 21 June 2014

RT logoA 7,500-gallon storage tank of crude oil has completely drained into the scenic Cache La Poudre, Colorado’s only designated National Wild and Scenic River, southeast of Fort Collins.

Vegetation was covered by an oil slick a quarter-mile downstream, but authorities claim “no drinking water intakes have been affected.”

The environmental disaster occurred at Noble Energy facility near Windsor in northern Colorado, in imminent proximity to the popular Poudre River Trail, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) reported late Friday afternoon.

The office of the US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) confirmed that New Zealand had been absent from the spy alliance for two decades, although it refrained from explaining the reason for its break from the Five Eyes. During New Zealander Prime Minister John Key’s visit to New York, DNI spokesman Brian Hale told Fairfax news agency that the “reintegration” happened in 2009 as it was believed it was “in the best interest of their nation and their group.
