Internet Providers File Legal Complaint Against GCHQ Snooping – 2 July 2014

RT logoSeven Internet service providers, including the UK-based GreenNet, have filed an official complaint at the investigatory powers tribunal in London charging Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) with illegal surveillance.

The ISPs come from the US, UK Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.

They have also joined forces with the anti-surveillance charity Privacy International, who unsuccessfully tried to take GCHQ to court last year over its use of spyware trained on UK internet users. The group accuses the agency of breaching UK laws, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights, which is designed to protect the privacy of all EU citizens.

“These widespread attacks on providers and collectives undermine the trust we all place on the internet and greatly endangers the world’s most powerful tool for democracy and free expression.” Eric King, deputy director of Privacy International, said in a statement.

In their joint statement, the ministers called for the Contact Group to resume its work “no later than July 5 with the goal of reaching an unconditional and mutually agreed, sustainable ceasefire.”

The group should include representatives of both Kiev and the self-defense forces of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said.

Tony Blair ‘To Advise’ Egypt’s President On Ecomic Reform – 2 July 2014

RT logoTony Blair has reportedly agreed to advise Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, as part of a United Arab Emirates-funded program which promises lucrative “business opportunities” to those involved.

Blair is set to give Sisi advise on economic reform in tandem with a UAE financed taskforce in Cairo, the Guardian reported on Wednesday.

According to the daily, the taskforce is being run by the management consultancy Strategy&, formerly Booz and Co, now part of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The group hopes to attract foreign direct investment to Egypt’s crisis racked economy at an upcoming Egypt donors’ conference, which is being sponsored by oil-rich UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Free Speech Banned: Student Group Sues 4 US Universities That ‘Stifle Dissent’ – 2 July 2014

RT logoArguing that free speech is suffering at colleges across the US, an advocacy group filed lawsuits against four universities, seeking to strengthen the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has filed lawsuits against four schools – Iowa State University, Ohio University, Chicago University and Citrus College in Glendora, California – that it says disrupt the flow of free speech in a number of ways, including the banning of particular T-shirts, for example, or by refusing to permit certain speakers address the student body on controversial issues.

According to the group’s estimate, about 60 percent of public universities and colleges have restrictions on rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

China’s Monthlong Block Of Google Hits Businesses – 2 July 2014

RT logoChinese business says it’s being increasingly hit by a monthlong government clampdown on Google, and is realizing how reliant it is on the service. The controls are part of Chinese government attempts to reduce foreign influence it considers pernicious.

Since 2009 when Google stopped censoring searches, the service has been subjected to a cycle of impediments from Chinese authorities. The last restriction of such scale was in November and lasted just a few days during the Communist Party’s Third Plenum, the Financial Times (FT) reports.

The so-called Great Firewall, a censorship and surveillance project operated by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, was designed to block subversive content on the national internet and has been implemented against Facebook, Twitter, and Google content.
