Free Speech Banned: Student Group Sues 4 US Universities That ‘Stifle Dissent’ – 2 July 2014

RT logoArguing that free speech is suffering at colleges across the US, an advocacy group filed lawsuits against four universities, seeking to strengthen the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has filed lawsuits against four schools – Iowa State University, Ohio University, Chicago University and Citrus College in Glendora, California – that it says disrupt the flow of free speech in a number of ways, including the banning of particular T-shirts, for example, or by refusing to permit certain speakers address the student body on controversial issues.

According to the group’s estimate, about 60 percent of public universities and colleges have restrictions on rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

China’s Monthlong Block Of Google Hits Businesses – 2 July 2014

RT logoChinese business says it’s being increasingly hit by a monthlong government clampdown on Google, and is realizing how reliant it is on the service. The controls are part of Chinese government attempts to reduce foreign influence it considers pernicious.

Since 2009 when Google stopped censoring searches, the service has been subjected to a cycle of impediments from Chinese authorities. The last restriction of such scale was in November and lasted just a few days during the Communist Party’s Third Plenum, the Financial Times (FT) reports.

The so-called Great Firewall, a censorship and surveillance project operated by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, was designed to block subversive content on the national internet and has been implemented against Facebook, Twitter, and Google content.

John Ward – The Continuing Story Of Why Microsoft Needs To Be Dismantled And Sold Off, # 2 – 2 July 2014

JohnWI know it’s boring and all that, but I’ve been having this farcical debate with Skype for some days now about not being able to sign into my contacts, using the supplied security methods, because I’m temporarily using an emergency notebook.

I don’t know of a single other net-based comms service that is phased by one signing in from another pc, but Skype is very happy to sell you addons, just not for you to get to your contacts and use the service. This is palpably obviously very bad for the company’s velocity of usage….which must be suffering, because they now have a mass-produced response for when everyone asks whereTF have my contacts gone.
