DEA Assigned Agents Who Left Student For Dead In Cell To Investigate Themselves – 9 July 2014

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released on Tuesday a summary of its investigation into the arrest of University of California-San Diego student Daniel Chong, who resorted to drinking his urine and, believing he would not survive, attempted to scrawl a farewell message in blood on his cell wall. According to Chong’s lawyers, he reached a $4.1 million settlement with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) last year.

The OIG said it was a conflict of interest for the supervisor of the DEA’s San Diego Field Division to call on the same case agents responsible for Chong’s prolonged detention to head the investigation into how and why Chong was abandoned without sustenance or access to a toilet.

BRICS Countries Near Development Bank Deal To Rival IMF, WB – 9 July 2014

RT logoThe emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, are a couple of days from agreeing the $10 billion BRICS development bank, as well as a $100 billion currency pool. It could challenge global lenders like the IMF and World Bank.

The bank will be called the New Development Bank, and will provide finance for infrastructure projects. Its creation will meet the needs of emerging and poorer economies according to Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.

In a speech Wednesday he confirmed the funding would be divided equally, Russia will contribute $2 billion in initial capital for the BRICS bank over seven years.

Unpaid In The UK: No Lunch, No Overtime As Excessive Work Culture Grips Britain – 9 July 2014

RT logoA culture of overtime is deeply embedded in UK work places, as nearly 50 percent of managers work a full day of unpaid overtime each week, research published by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) has revealed.

Conducted online, the research surveyed a total of 1,056 managers based in the United Kingdom. It found that 76 percent work late on a regular basis, while 48 percent work so hard they fail to take a lunch break.

A further 13 percent of UK managers work a full two days overtime per week without any remuneration, the study suggests.

French Financier To Head Scandal-Plagued Vatican Bank – 9 July 2014

RT logoFrench financier Jean-Baptiste de Franssu has been appointed the new President of the Vatican bank. It is part of the major overhaul of the bank to restore its reputation after a long list of money laundering scandals.

Jean-Baptiste de Franssu, 51, is the founder and Chairman of INCIPIT, and has been serving on the new Vatican economic council. An expert in investment banking, he was Chief Executive Officer of INVESCO Europe and member of the INVESCO Worldwide management committee.

Franssu will head a new board and management team at the Vatican bank.

‘Second CIA Spy In Germany’: Berlin Raids Ministry Of Defense – 9 July 2014

RT logoGerman authorities have carried out a raid on the residence of a defense ministry official suspected of passing secrets to the US, just one week after the arrest of a German intelligence officer who worked as a double agent.

Officials from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday that residential and office premises of the staff of the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin were searched on “initial suspicion of activity for an intelligence agency.”

According to the German newspaper Die Welt, a soldier of the Bundeswehr is suspected of committing espionage. The individual was said to have made “intensive contacts” with alleged US intelligence officials and was under the surveillance of the Military Intelligence (MAD) some time ago.
