Turkey’s PM Erdogan Wins Presidential Election With 53% – Early Results – 10 August 2014

RT logoTurkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has won the presidential election with over 53 percent of the vote, according to early results. Thus, Erdogan has become the country’s first popularly-elected head of state.

“The chairman of the AK Party and the prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has become the first president elected by the people,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag posted on his Twitter account.

With nearly 95 percent of the votes counted, Erdogan leads with 53 percent, the Hurriyet Daily reports.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, former Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, has received more than 37 percent of the votes. Selahattin Demirtas, head of the leftist pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, is in third place with just over 9 percent.
