Thank goodness, one more day and we close the door to August.  For me personally, it has been the roughest of months this whole year.  However, as I look back on all the months this year, for the majority of them, I was glad to see them go.  What a biologically rough year!!  I suppose tho, thru the snot and the hacking, it has been equally illuminating.

I know that we don’t usually look at this time of year in relationship to New Years, but it really does have the feel of New Years, maybe, New Life period is a better term.  But, before we look ahead, lets look back and see what all brought us to here.

Some 400 people have joined a protest camp in Newport to protest against NATO. The march comes ahead of next week’s military summit that will see 60 world leaders descend on the area and is already causing considerable disruption to locals.

“Nuclear NATO – no, thanks!” or “Iraq, Ukraine – no more wars” read the numerous placards as about 400 protesters took in a march on Saturday against the upcoming NATO summit.

US Judge Rules Microsoft Must Handover Personal Data Stored Abroad – 30 August 2014

Microsoft has been told it must handover emails stored abroad to US prosecutors by a New York court. However, the software giant says it will fight the ruling, saying that an email deserves the same privacy protection as a paper letter sent by mail.

The company says they will not release any emails to US authorities, while it appeals the ruling, made by Chief Judge Loretta Preska of the US District Court in Manhattan. She said that Microsoft must hand over information, regardless of where it was stored.

“Microsoft will not be turning over the email and plans to appeal,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters. “Everyone agrees this case can and will proceed to the appeals court. This is simply about finding the appropriate procedure for that to happen.”

ZeroHedge – Government To Regulate Groundwater For 1st Time As California Drought Becomes “Race To The Bottom”- 30 August 2014

 The ongoing disaster that is the drought in the West is leaving wells dry across California – which account for up to 60% of water usage. As WSJ reports, as groundwater levels plunge (100 feet or more lower than norm), wells are being driven further and further into the earth (500 feet in some cases) forcing the state legislature is considering regulating underground water for the first time. “We can’t continue to pump groundwater at the rates we are and expect it to continue in the future,” warns one engineer, adding “What’s scary is we’re not fixing anything… It’s a race to the bottom.”
