Laura Bruno – Winter Gardening Ideas – 31 August 2014

Here’s John Kohler, whose garden I have visited and tasted (amazingly yummy inspiration to grow your own food!), giving a tour of his Northern California winter garden. If you live in a cooler climate than Sonoma County, then now would be the time to start growing some of the things he mentions. This video just reminded me to get some miner’s lettuce seeds to plant under trees. $6 /pound or free and reseeding as “weeds”? Um, yum! I’ll take the miner’s lettuce. 🙂 You can also mimic a warmer climate by getting floating row covers and cold frames.

Laura Bruno – Monsanto in Ukraine: IMF loan For Ukraine May Give GMO Giant A Backdoor Into EU – 31 August 2014

laura-of-the-rocksYep. No surprise here … So interesting in that Russia has come out with such a strong anti-GMO stance. They get sanctioned then boycott Western agriculture. Um, somehow, I think Russia’s getting the better end of the deal here. Certainly better than Ukraine. I’d pass on Frankencrops, too. Continue reading

Gaza Reconstruction Will Take 20 Years, Says UN-Backed Authority – 31 August 2014

RT logoA UN backed construction authority has said rebuilding Gaza’s battered and neglected housing stock will take at least 20 years as thousands of houses were razed or suffered damage in Israel’s Protective Edge operation.

Shelter Cluster, an international organization involved in assessing post-conflict reconstruction, which is co-chaired by the UN refugee agency and the Red Cross, says that 17,000 houses were destroyed or severely damaged during the seven week war between Israel and Hamas.

An additional 5,000 homes still needed work after previous wars, while Gaza with its 1.8 million people squeezed into 5046/km2 of land has a housing deficit of 75,000 houses.

‘Biggest In 30 Years’: Israel Expropriates 400 Hectares Of W. Bank Land – 31 August 2014

RT logoThe Israeli military-run Civil Administration has announced a land appropriation of some 400 hectares in the West Bank to an almost immediate condemnation from anti-settlement activists, who say this is the biggest seizure in 30 years.

Around 400 hectares of land in the Etzion settlement area near the town of Bethlehem were declared “state land, on the instructions of the political echelon” by the Civil Administration on Sunday. Israel Radio said that announcement was made in response to the killing of three Jewish teens in June by Hamas militants in the same area.

The building of a major settlement in the area, known as Gevaot, has been on the cards since 2000 and last year the Israeli government invited tenders for the building of 1,000 houses on the site.

Steve Lendman – Hard Truths On Ukraine MSM Suppress – 31 August 2014

StevelendmanOn September 4 and 5, Britain will host a summit meeting of NATO heads of state. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will chair the proceedings.

At issue is justifying the unjustifiable. It’s doing so based on Big Lies. It’s wrongfully accusing Russia of “illegal actions in Ukraine.”
It’s suppressing polar opposite truths. It’s supporting Washington’s imperial agenda. It’s presenting a unified anti-Russian front.
t’s deploying thousands of combat-ready forces closer to Russia’s border. It’s “sustain(ing) a robust (Eastern European) presence…”
