AFP, Aug 29, 2014: [TEPCO] said it had not detected any significant changes in radiation readings or in the level of pool water at the No. 3 reactor… Friday’s incident occurred shortly after noon during a remotely controlled operation to remove debris from the fuel pool at the unit where the broken reactor still lies untouched… The operating console of the fuel handling machine slipped loose and fell into the pool… In a vivid reminder of the fragility of the area, a magnitude-5.0 quake struck off the Fukushima coast hours after…

Bloomberg News, Aug 29, 2014: A 400 kg piece of equipment slipped from a crane and fell back into a pool holding spent uranium fuel rods… [It] is about a meter wide and 1.6 meters high…  Today, the utility known as Tepco was attempting to move the device as part of its cleanup at the site, said spokesman Hiroshi Itagaki… Itagaki said the company is unable to say at present whether the accident damaged any of the uranium fuel rods in the pool.

NATO Summit: Obama, Cameron Urge Allies To Ramp Up Military Spending – 1 September 2014

Barack Obama and David Cameron will urge NATO members to increase military spending at the alliance’s summit in Wales, amid criticism that some countries are getting a “free ride”, growing geopolitical tensions and Europe-wide austerity.

The NATO summit, which kicks off later this week, will see Obama and Cameron urge European state leaders to protect their continent from amplifying threats by honoring commitments to allocate a minimum of 2 percent of GDP on defense spending. NATO members attending the two-day summit in Newport will also debate how best to deal with the ongoing crises in Iraq and Ukraine.

While the White House has insisted increased military spending is a “top priority”, many diplomats believe the US administration’s plea will be rejected by EU states, which are still suffering from the ravages of a deep recession. At present, only two NATO members have reached the 2 percent target other than the US and Britain.

Shortly after I’d posted about the Foley ‘beheading’, several people suggested by email that I should ‘look into’ James Foley’s (right) professional background. I had sort of vaguely heard of his employers – The Global Post – but couldn’t have told you the first thing about them. It is a Boston-based site, with 65 foreign correspondents throughout the world. These days in journalism, that’s a big number.

Focusing primarily on International news, the website TGB was founded in 2009 by Charles M. Sennott and Philip S. Balboni. So says the site. But Phil Balboni’s news organisation was founded much earlier – in 1994. This is the Bloomberg entry on TGB:

Documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden show that Turkey is one of the agency’s top spying objectives, on a par with Venezuela and more than arch-foe Cuba – despite Ankara’s close cooperation with Washington on intelligence.

Turkey is the National Security Agency’s (NSA) oldest partner in Asia. However, their military and intelligence officials, as well as politicians, are seen in the US as legitimate targets to spy on. According to a report in Der Speigel in conjunction with The Intercept, documents released by Edward Snowden show just how far Washington was willing to go to snoop on its ally.

The new leak cites the National Intelligence Priorities Framework (NIPF), a document produced by the NSA to establish intelligence priorities. The list is updated every six months to keep it relevant and also to take into account geopolitical changes around the globe. For instance, it shows that interest and surveillance in Syria has increased dramatically over the last few years.

North Korea has slammed a new British TV drama thriller revolving around its nuclear weapons program, urging the UK government to scrap the “slanderous farce” if it wants to maintain diplomatic ties.

A spokesman for the powerful National Defence Commission in Pyongyang described the upcoming Channel 4 TV series as a “slanderous farce” and a “conspiratorial charade.”

Opposite Number – a 10-part drama series commissioned by Channel 4 – features a British nuclear scientist captured in North Korea during a covert mission and forced to assist the country with its nuclear weapons program.
