Living Near Fracking Sites Deteriorates Health – Study – 12 September 2014

Those who live in close proximity to fracking sites exhibited a greater likelihood to suffer skin and respiratory problems than those who lived farther away from natural gas wells, according to a new study of Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale region.

The study, “Proximity to Natural Gas Wells and Reported Health Status: Results of a Household Survey in Washington County, Pennsylvania,” published this week in Environmental Health Perspectives, found that people who reside within one kilometer of a hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, well were significantly more likely to endure ill health effects than those living two kilometers away.

A Yale-based research team addressed 492 individuals in 180 households in southwestern Pennsylvania, where the Marcellus shale has attracted its fair share of the fracking surge seen throughout the United States. Washington County alone has 624 active gas wells, 95 percent of which have been used for fracking.

‘His Hands Were Up!’ New Footage Shows Ferguson Witnesses Reacting To Teen’s Death – 12 September 2014

New footage of the moments just after Ferguson, Missouri teenager Michael Brown was killed by a local police officer indicates that a witness on the scene said the unarmed 18-year-old’s hands were raised while he was fatally shot.

The video, released by CNN, shows several witnesses gathering in the vicinity of Brown’s slaying, attention focused on the spot where Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed the unarmed teenager early last month, the network reported.

EU-Ukraine Integration Pact Postponed Till 2016 After Talks Between Moscow, Kiev & Brussels – 12 September 2014

Moscow scored a major diplomatic coup after Kiev agreed to postpone the enforcement of its Association Agreement with EU until the end of next year, following three-way talks between Russia, Ukraine and European Union officials in Brussels.

“We agreed on delaying the provisional application until the end of next year and to prolong the autonomous trade measures for the same period. That gives breathing space to discuss whatever problem may arise and then it will be up to the three parties concerned to see what they do after Jan. 1, 2016. I hope by then we come to a solution,” said EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht, following the conclusion of the one-day negotiations.

The European official said Ukraine would begin to enjoy unfettered access to European markets starting from the ratification of the EU Association Agreement, which paves the way for the country’s economic and eventually political integration into Europe.

Stark Warning: WHO Says Ebola Epidemic Out Of Control, Death Toll Over 2,400 – 12 September 2014

West Africa’s explosion of Ebola cases is outpacing the ability of healthcare workers to manage the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, as more countries have stepped up to the plate to lend their assistance.

WHO director general Margaret Chan said the depth of the Ebola crisis, concentrated on the countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, now required more international assistance.

“The Ebola outbreak that is ravaging parts of West Africa is the largest and most complex and most severe in the almost four-decade history of this disease,” she told a news conference in Geneva.

The death toll from the deadly virus, for which there is no known cure, surged to more than 2,400 people out of 4,784 cases. Meanwhile, Chan said the current death toll figures were most certainly “an underestimate.”

EU To Give Ukraine Another €8Bn To Help Reform – 12 September 2014

The European Union is to provide Ukraine with €8 billion to carry out reforms, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said Friday.

“We are convinced that this Agreement (EU – Ukraine Association Agreement) will promote further economic growth and modernization of the Ukrainian economy. Eight billion euro will be transferred to Ukraine to stabilize the economy. But this support is not unconditional. It is based on the expectation that the country will continue to follow the path of reformation,” RBC quotes Schultz.

The required reforms would include electoral law, a comprehensive constitutional reform, elimination of corruption, and the respect of human rights and minority rights, Schultz explained.

In turn Aleksey Ulyukayev, the Russian Minister of Economic Development said that if Ukraine proceeds with the EU Association Agreement as of November 1, Russia will respond with the introduction of import tariffs on Ukrainian goods.
