Mother Jones – Peter Van Buren – A Former Diplomat Explains Why Our Third War In Iraq Is Doomed – 24 September 2014

This story first appeared on the TomDispatch website.

I wanted to offer a wry chuckle before we headed into the heavy stuff about Iraq, so I tried to start this article with a suitably ironic formulation. You know, a déjà-vu-all-over-again kinda thing.

Ferguson Fire Claims Citizens’ Michael Brown Memorial – 24 September 2014

RT logoFire has destroyed one of the two memorials to Michael Brown located on the street on which he was shot dead in August. The place has been dear to many in Ferguson, as the town saw weeks of confrontations between residents and police.

The cause of the fire is not clear yet. But many of those who gathered in the street blamed police for the blaze. The chief said officers were doing all they could to try and prevent the memorial – comprised of stuffed animals and other items – catch fire for candles, according to AP.

Residents are divided as to whether it was an accident or somebody set it on fire. The blaze gathered crowds, who expressed their distress at the fire, as well as discontent with the probe into the shooting of the unarmed, black 18-year-old by a white Ferguson police officer.

Billionaires Sitting On Growing Piles Of Cash – 24 September 2014

RT logoStill jittery over the 2008 market crash, billionaires are hoarding mountains of cash – $600 million on average – hoping to have it on hand for a good investment opportunity, and perhaps signaling to ordinary people what to do with their money.

Over 2,300 billionaires worldwide, worth $7.3 trillion total, are sequestering record amounts of cash – each holding $600 million on average, or 19 percent of their net worth, says a new report by the Wealth X and UBS. The amount represents an increase of $60 million in cash per billionaire from a year ago, and wealth followers say it’s a sign that the ultra-wealthy are nervous about putting more money in today’s markets.

This increased liquidity signals that many billionaires are keeping their money on the sidelines and waiting for the optimal moment to make further investments,” the study said.

Bombing ‘Imminent Threat’: US Justifies Strikes Without ‘Direct Request’ From Syria – 24 September 2014

RT logoThe UN chief is “aware” that the Syrian government did not directly “request” airstrikes on terrorist targets on their soil and urged all parties involved in the US-led anti-ISIS campaign to take all necessary precautions to minimize civilian casualties.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he is “aware” that the US-led intrusion and airstrikes on Islamic State targets were not carried out “at the direct request of the Syrian Government,” in a statement delivered at a climate summit press conference.

However, he noted that Damascus “was informed beforehand” and that the strikes took place in “areas no longer under the effective control” of the government.

Time For change? New Zealand PM Wants To Cut Britain’s Union Jack Out Of National Flag – 24 September 2014

RT logoNew Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who just won a third term in office, wants to drop the Union Jack from his country’s flag. He plans to hold a referendum in 2015, which could lead to the creation of a new flag for the nation.

Just days after sealing a third three-year term as the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key is already looking to move away from the country’s colonial past. The head of state wants to hold a referendum in 2015 to see if the public wants to abolish the 122 year-old symbol, which has the Union Jack in the left corner and four stars which symbolize the Southern Cross constellation

“I want to get on with it. To me, I’d like to do it in 2015,” said Key, referring to the project of remaking the country’s flag. “I’d like to complete the whole process next year. I don’t think it’s one of those things we should hang around with forever,” the Washington Post quoted him saying.
