Putin: Russia Won’t Limit Access To Internet – 1 October 2014

RT logoAt a meeting with Russia’s Security Council, President Vladimir Putin has said the problem of the country’s ‘informational space’ security is of top priority, but assured the state has no intentions of limiting access to the web.

We do not intend to limit access to the web, put it under total control, make the internet more governmentalized. We will not limit legal interests and possibilities of people, non-governmental organizations and businesses in the informational sphere,” Putin said at the meeting on Wednesday.

He added that such “unreasonable” and “total” restrictions contradict the basic principles of democracy, including the freedom of press and civil rights of access to and distribution of information. He said the state was “not even considering” such measures.

YouTube-Rated: UK Music Videos To Be Age-Classified To Protect Children – 1 October 2014

RT logoMovie-style classification ratings are to be slapped on to music videos in the UK, in a new pilot scheme designed to protect children from viewing raunchy, inappropriate and violent content.

Three of the UK’s biggest music labels – Warner, Universal and Sony – will work with internet video services YouTube and Vevo to design the pilot scheme, which will see videos from artists like Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Rihanna age classified.

The firms will submit controversial music videos to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), who will issue the videos age-rating labels of 12, 15 or 18.

“Parents are eager to have more input over the types of content their children access, particularly online,” assistant director of BBFC David Austin told the Independent.

National Security Amendments Bill (No. 1), passed by Australia’s House of Representatives on Wednesday, says a person who discloses information relating to a special intelligence operation may face from five to 10 years behind bars.

Copying, transcribing or retaining records of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) is also outlawed, which is seen as a measure taken in the wake of Edward Snowden’s leaks of documents on the US’s National Security Agency.

UK Tornado Jets In New Iraq Strikes Against ISIS Vehicles – 1 October 2014

RT logoRAF jets fired four Brimstone missiles at Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS and ISIL) vehicles in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

Two Tornado jets attacked an armed pick-up truck escort and a transport vehicle.

On Tuesday two GR-4 Tornado warplanes targeted a “heavy weapon position.” These were the UK’s first strikes on IS targets since parliament approved military action last Friday.

The Tornados from the RAF airbase in Akrotiri, Cyprus, conducted an armed reconnaissance mission in support of Iraqi government forces west of Baghdad. It called the strikes “successful.”

Scuffles As Catalonia Erupts In Protests Over Nov. 9 Referendum Ban – 1 October 2014

RT logoPolice clashed with thousands of Catalan demonstrators as they hit the streets of Barcelona and Madrid on Tuesday, outraged at the Spanish Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend Catalonia’s November vote for independence.

The independence referendum planned by Catalonia’s president for this November was unanimously suspended by 12 judges of the Spanish Constitutional Court on Monday.

Angered by the decision, protesters took to the streets of Barcelona and several other cities, promising they are ready to begin “the most powerful political campaign in European history” in case the referendum is not held, according to RIA Novosti citing protest organizers.

Disarming Law: Californians Gain Right To Have Relatives’ Guns Confiscated – 1 October 2014

RT logoUnder a new California law, families can ask police to confiscate lawfully-owned weapons from close relatives. The law was introduced after an unstable gunman’s shooting rampage left seven people dead and 13 injured.

It is the first law in the US that gives families who think a close relative might commit gun violence the ability to petition for a restraining order. The measure was signed into law Tuesday by Democrat Governor Jerry Brown, and has wide support by law enforcement agencies and gun control advocates.

“The new ‘Gun Violence Restraining Order’ Law will give families and law enforcement a needed tool to reduce the risk of mass shootings and gun violence both in the home and on our streets,”
said Nick and Amanda Wilcox, legislative co-chairs of the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, reported Reuters.

Farmacology: Disease Researchers Say Obama’s Antibiotic Resistance Plan Should Target Livestock – 1 October 2014

RT logoThe United States has a plan to fight the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant diseases. But some experts believe that by not focusing those that ingest most of these drugs – farm animals – humanity could face a huge problem in the future.

Roughly 80 percent of all antibiotics in the US are used on farm animals, according to the Verge. With livestock consuming the vast majority of antibiotics, the bacteria found inside the animals gradually develop resistance against the drugs when they are not administered in strong enough doses – meaning they also become much harder to treat in humans if and when the bacteria are transferred.
