#NoToTTIP: 1,000s To March In UK, Across Europe Against Transatlantic Trade Deal – 10 October 2014

Activists will rally in Westminster on Saturday as part of a Europe-wide protest against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which critics say will eradicate public services including the NHS and the BBC.

More than 1,000 people are expected to march against the treaty in London over the weekend, with many more holding demonstrations in UK cities and throughout Europe.

TTIP is a new trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States. The UK government backs the deal, claiming it could add billions to the economy by reducing regulations and other barriers to trade.

Oxygen Before Life: Experiment Creates O2 Without Plants – 10 October 2014

A new experiment has shown that atmospheric oxygen can be created without plant life, possibly explaining the presence of small amounts of O2 on Mars.

A team of researchers at UC Davis, California have developed a mechanism for creating oxygen that doesn’t require photosynthesis. Using a vacuum ultraviolet laser – solar light – to irradiate carbon dioxide (CO2) in the lab, the team was able to break the CO2 apart in one step, leaving free carbon and oxygen.

Once the CO2 was broken up into carbon and oxygen, the team used an ion imaging apparatus to track the results.

MH17 Crash: Ukraine Security Chief Says Missile Only Kiev Has May Be Found At Crash Site – 10 October 2014

Ukraine’s Security Council chief may have inadvertently spilled the beans, saying fragments of a Buk-M missile may be found with MH17 crash debris. However, the exact missile he mentioned is only possessed by Ukraine, Russian army officials say.

Investigation of the MH17 Boeing-777-200 crash in July will be completed when the remains of the Buk-M air defense missile are found, Valentin Nalivaichenko, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), told Ukrainian TV.

Ukraine will fulfill its obligations and identify the perpetrators, who will bear responsibility and compensate for the damage for taking down the MH17 flight with 298 passengers and crew on board, Nalivaichenko said.

UK parliament To Vote On Historic Palestine Motion – 10 October 2014

British MPs will vote on Monday on an historic motion to symbolically recognize Palestine as an independent state. With Labour instructing its MPs to vote in favour, the non-binding motion would increase pressure on PM David Cameron over the issue.

Proposed by the chair of Labour Friends of Palestine, the back-bencher’s motion also has the support of Liberal Democrat MPs. A number of Conservative backbenchers will also lend their support, despite the party’s large pro-Israel constituency.

The motion states: “This House believes that the Government should recognize the state of Palestine alongside the State of Israel.”
