US Needs Pro-American Lobby In Israel – 21 October 2014

RT logoBehind the polite and diplomatic statements regarding the “unbreakable bond” that exists between the United States and Israel lays a more disturbing truth that is slowly coming to the surface.

It would require more than one article to document the litany of diplomatic disasters that have plagued the US-Israeli relationship of late, and especially since Barack Obama entered the White House.

Perhaps one of the more memorable setbacks occurred during the November 2011 G20 meeting where Obama and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy were overheard expressing less-than-flattering remarks about Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, I can’t stand him. He’s a liar,” Sarkozy reportedly told Obama, to which Obama responded: “You are sick of him, but I have to work with him every day.”

32 US Cities Tackle Telecom Giants In High-Speed Internet Revolution – 21 October 2014

RT logoThirty-two cities across the US are battling to break the chains of Telecom giant domination, with near-monopoly power and legal leverage leaving many municipalities stuck on the shoulder of the information superhighway.

Flying under the banner Next Century Cities, the bi-partisan effort hopes to ensure gigabit-fiber internet for their residents in order to revamp their towns for the 21st century.

The progressive initiative aims to help cities stuck in a DSL time warp navigate the legal and logistical challenges who would like to build fiber networks in their own backyards rather than be left in the lurch by telecom firms who have skimped on vital infrastructure investment.

On Monday, nearly three dozen cities spanning 19 states officially launched their campaign in Santa Monica, California, which already has gigabit level internet at its disposal.

GMO Backlash: Syngenta Faces Mounting Lawsuits Over Genetically-Modified Seeds – 21 October 2014

RT logoAgribusiness giant Syngenta AG now faces lawsuits from farmers in 11 US states claiming the seed-and-chemical company’s sale of a genetically-engineered variant of corn yet to receive approval in China depressed market prices for the grain.

At issue is Syngenta’s 2009 release and distribution of its MIR162 genetically-modified corn known as Agrisure Viptera, which is engineered to fend off certain insects known to decimate corn crops. While approved for use in the United States, Chinese regulators have yet to sanction the export of Viptera.

Last November, China began rejecting US corn shipments based on the existence of Viptera leading to more than $1 billion in damages for US farmers, plaintiffs in 11 states have alleged in various lawsuits filed in federal courts in recent weeks. RT reported earlier this month on three of these lawsuits against Switzerland-based Syngenta.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership – One Sick Treaty? – 21 October 2014

RT logoThe secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will increase patent protection for the benefit of big pharmaceutical companies, but are such policies really in the interests of global health?

Eradicating disease from the face of the Earth

There are many illnesses that I have never known in my life, but surely two of the most profound are smallpox and polio. Smallpox once killed 400,000 people annually in Europe alone, with as many as 500 million deaths worldwide attributed to the disease in the first 80 years of the 20th Century. Polio was once also endemic to most parts of the world. It killed, too, but also left sufferers – many of them children – with serious physical disabilities, including partial paralysis. Even in highly developed countries like the USA, tens of thousands of children contracted polio each year with scores forced into the dreaded “iron lung” just to keep breathing. Yet today polio exists in only a handful of countries.

Russia, China Prepare To Sign Unique Cybersecurity Treaty – Report – 21 October 2014

RT logoAn unprecedented treaty on cybersecurity cooperation could be signed during Vladimir Putin’s state visit to China in November, a Russian business daily reports.

Popular newspaper Kommersant quoted unnamed sources “close to the Kremlin” as saying that the final text of the “two-sided agreement on cooperation in the field of information security” was not ready yet, but officials hope the document will be signed on November 10.

The draft treaty states the two countries oppose the use of information technology to meddle in the internal affairs of independent states, to undermine national sovereignty as well as political, economic and social stability and public order, Kommersant reported.

The daily’s sources also added that Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping were expected to deliver a joint address on cybersecurity in the course of Putin’s visit to China.

More UK Troops To Tackle Ebola In Sierra Leone – 21 October 2014

RT logoAround 150 army medics will arrive in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Tuesday evening as part of the UK’s aid effort to tackle Ebola. The soldiers will join a further 90 British medics and 300 soldiers already combating the virus.

The troops will run the Ebola Training Academy, teaching local healthcare workers how to prevent the spread of the disease.

The epidemic, which has left 4,500 dead, has infected more than double that number in West Africa.

Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea have been worst affected, with over 90 cases per 100,000 people in some areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Nigeria, however, is now free of the virus, having had no new cases in six weeks.

RT logoRussia has placed a ban on the import and transit of all fruit and vegetables from Ukraine, starting Wednesday, for fear they may originate from the EU, Russia’s consumer health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor has said.

Any unmarked agricultural cargo coming from Ukraine to Russia runs the risk of originating from the European Union, which violates Russian sanctions against importing EU products.
