Domestic violence should be treated as a separate and specific criminal offence, the Law Commission said in a consultation launched Wednesday.
The Commission’s proposal comes after Prime Minister David Cameron and other senior ministers offered support for such a measure over the summer.
Both Cameron and Labour Party Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have backed the designation of an offence which deals specifically with domestic violence.
