Everybody knows Jonathan Gruber now. He was a consultant who helped frame the Obamacare law.

He’s stated that that, yes, Obamacare has a tax in its provisions, and yes the public was deceived.

Gruber: “This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies… [I]f you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in – you made explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed… Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really really critical for the thing to pass… Look, I wish Mark was right that we could make it all transparent, but I’d rather have this law than not.”

Dragnet: Justice Dept Gets Airborne To Spy On Thousands Of American Cellphone Users – 14 November 2014

New disclosures show the Justice Department is engaged in dragnet surveillance using aircraft equipped with a device that mimics a cellphone tower and scoops up data from thousands of mobile phone users to hunt for criminal suspects.

The US Marshals Service program operates Cessna aircraft from five metropolitan airports, all equipped with a fake cellphone tower device that can trick phones into reporting their unique registration information, according to disclosures first reported by The Wall Street Journal. During a single flight, the dragnet data collection will scoop up identifying information and the general location of thousands of cellphones.

Since mobile phones are programmed to connect automatically to the strongest cellphone tower signal, the device – or “dirtbox” – used by the Marshals Service mimics this signal in order to ensure connectivity. By doing so, the surveillance program cuts out phone companies as an intermediary. The method is used to target a cellphone being used by a person under investigation by the department – a fugitive or drug dealer.

California Police Spent $45Mn On Spy Gear With Little Oversight – 14 November 2014

Police departments across California spent more than $45 million on surveillance equipment over the course of a decade with little to no legislative or public oversight – and without the public’s knowledge, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU report, titled ‘Making Smart Decisions about Surveillance: A Guide for Communities,’ reveals how California law enforcement took advantage of millions of dollars’ worth of federal surveillance gear to sidestep city council oversight and boards of supervisors. Police also avoided consideration of costs and benefits and left the public in the dark as to how law enforcement was using the equipment to track their lives.

Shell Ignored ‘Risk & Hazard’ Of Nigeria Pipes, Downplayed Size Of 2008 Spills – Court Documents – 14 November 2014

Royal Dutch Shell was aware that its Nigerian pipelines were poorly maintained prior to the 2008 Bodo oil spills, and later underestimated the size of the leaks to avoid paying compensation, Amnesty International reported after studying court documents.

Fifteen-thousand members of the Bodo community are suing Shell in London’s High Court, claiming the two oil spills in 2008 devastated an area of up to 90km in Ogoniland, southern Nigeria. The oil giant earned $450 billion in revenues last year.

“The result was an environmental catastrophe for the Bodo Community and the biggest loss of mangrove habitat in the history of oil spills. The 40,000 residents of the Bodo Community primarily relied on fishing and their way of life and source of livelihoods has been destroyed for years to come,” said Martyn Day, a senior partner at Leigh Day, which is representing the plaintiffs.

‘Xenophobic’ Violence In Rome Forces Evacuation Of Kids, Riot Police Action – 14 November 2014

Unyielding attacks by locals against refugees have forced Rome’s mayor to order the evacuation of migrant children living in the eastern outskirts of the city. Riot police were unable to properly protect them from the anti-immigrant brutality.

A total of 45 children are being moved from a center for immigrants located in Tor Sapienza – a poor neighborhood on the periphery of Rome which has been harassed by local residents for the past four days.
