The federal government has been approving a high number of operations in which agents pose as activists and business people, a new report says. It has led to absurd situations, with undercover agents from different departments investigating each other.

At least 40 government agencies use undercover operatives in the US, with agents pretending to be business people, protesters, doctors, accountants, and welfare recipients, among other things, in order to monitor illegal activity. DuPont Chemical Leak Kills 4, Alerts Residents In Texas – 16 November 2014

Four DuPont employees were killed and another injured when a toxic chemical was spilled at its plant in La Porte, Texas, on Saturday morning. Residents of the city complained of a persistent “funny smell” after the incident.

The company would not immediately identify the victims of the spill. The emergency started at around 4 a.m. local time. It took repair crews two hours to replace a ruptured valve in the crop protection unit and contain the chemical. The confirmation of fatalities was released 12 hours after the incident.

The chemical spilled was methyl mercaptan, or methanethiol,which is used to make feed stock for insecticides and fungicides. It is more commonly known for being added to naturally odorless propane and natural gas to give them a distinctive rotten egg smell, making leaks detectable. In high concentration it can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, coma, and death.

‘If You Want Ads, Pay Us’: Facebook Cuts ‘Overly Promotional’ Posts In News Feed – 16 November 2014

Facebook says that from next year on, it will cut adverts masquerading as news posts to improve the user experience – likely forcing corporations to stump up more cash for actual ads.

“Our goal with News Feed has always been to show people the things they want to see,” said a statement from the California-based company, which has recently been flirting with all-time market cap records, and is currently valued at $207 billion.

“People told us they wanted to see more stories from friends and Pages they care about, and less promotional content,” it said.

When a typical user – with the average amount of friends and frequency of visits – logs into Facebook, he likely has more than 1,500 new items the company can display in his aggregated news feed. Those range from friends’ news to pages the user has ‘liked.’

‘No Pork Or Alcohol’: Top London Hotel Being Run Under Sharia Law? – 16 November 2014

London’s Bermondsey Square Hotel has suddenly banned the sale of alcohol, and reportedly pork, “in accordance with Sharia law” under the orders of its new Middle-Eastern owner.

The Islamic rules were imposed on the hotel on Tuesday, the Daily Mailreported.

It is not just alcoholic drinks which have been banned, but also any food containing alcohol. Items such as beer-battered fish or rum ice cream cannot be served in the establishment since the new rules were implemented, the report says, citing staff members.

An IT consultant who regularly stays at the hotel – which costs £220 (US$345) per night – confirmed to the Daily Mail that the bar does not serve alcohol anymore.
