UK Govt In The Dock Over ‘Illegal’ Air Pollution Levels – 17 April 2017

RT logoBritain’s Supreme Court is to rule on whether the UK government has breached EU law by failing to tackle air pollution in the country’s cities.

Thursday’s decision in the landmark case is the culmination of a four year legal battle over the UK’s poor air quality.

The hearing follows a decision by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) last year, which ruled the British government must have a plan to meet EU air quality standards in the “shortest time possible.”

Activist lawyers at ClientEarth say current plans mean the UK will not meet legal limits for air pollution in cities such as London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Glasgow until after 2030.
