Russian special forces are in an “active phase” of a standoff with suspected members of an international terrorist cell, at a house in the Republic of Dagestan. Two militants have been “neutralized” after they tried, but failed, to break out.
The counter-terrorist operation in Dagestan’s Buynaksk district began at 9:00am local time on Sunday. Special force police units and an FSB task force surrounded the building where a group of armed men including, according to preliminary data, the “leaders of an international terrorist group” happened to be at the time, country’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) said.
All civilians surrounding the residence were evacuated as authorities initiated negotiations with militants after discovering that besides a group of armed men, two women and a child were inside the house. During the tense negotiations which lasted across the day authorities offered militants to surrender, or at least release civilians to avoid any “innocent victims”.
