CNN Provokes Angry ‘Twitter Storm’ After Asking Whether Journalist Should Be Deported – 1 july 2014

RT logoCNN may have thought it was engaging viewers in a serious debate when it asked if an undocumented journalist should be removed from the United States, but instead the news outlet found itself in the middle of a Twitter firestorm.

The online controversy centers on the story of journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, a former Washington Post reporter and Huffington Post editor who recently unveiled that he is an undocumented immigrant.

Writing in the New York Times Magazine, Vargas explained that over the course of his life, he’s tried to live the American dream and carve out a place for himself in the United States.

Brazil Has Already Lost And It’s The People Who Pay The Price – 1 July 2014

RT logo“We don’t need the World Cup. We need health and education,” hand-written placards say during the recent demonstrations against the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Envisaged to give Brazil’s economy a second wind, the spiraling costs of building modern-day temples has caused a veritable storm. While the protests have diminished in recent weeks and the beautiful game has taken over, the questions facing Brazilian society remain the same: Where and how is money spent in Brazilian society?

In Brazilian cities such as Porto Alegre citizens were allowed to democratically decide how their tax money was spent, and how their public services run through ‘participatory budgeting’ at the beginning of this century. Today, Lula’s successor Dilma Rousseff and her left-wing Workers’ Party (PT) have turned from people’s power to the power of hosting mega-events for the one per cent. And the FIFA and the IOC dictate their budgets – even beyond the gates of the Maracana Stadium. The human cost involved should not come as a surprise.

NYPD ‘Cannibal Cop’ To Walk Free After Judge Overturns Conviction – 1 July 2014

RT logoA former New York Police Department officer convicted of planning to kidnap and rape women before killing and eating them is set to go free after a federal judge overturned his conviction.

According to Reuters, the so-called “Cannibal Cop” Gilberto Valle was acquitted by US District Judge Paul Gardephe on Monday. Valle has been in prison since he was arrested in 2012, and potentially faced life behind bars on kidnapping conspiracy charges.

In his opinion, Judge Gardephe stated that the evidence used to originally convict Valle did not sufficiently prove that the former officer acted on what his attorneys said were sexual, cannibalistic fantasies involving women he never met, as well as his wife.

Putin To West: Stop Turning World Into ‘Global Barracks,’ Dictating Rules To Others – 1 July 2014

RT logoRussia’s president has blamed the turmoil in Ukraine on the country’s newly-elected leader Petro Poroshenko. Vladimir Putin also criticized the West for its intention to turn the planet into a “global barracks.”

Russia’s president has laid the blame for the ongoing turmoil between Kiev and south-eastern regions squarely at the feet of Petro Poroshenko, after the Ukrainian leader terminated the ceasefire.

He has stressed that Russia and European partners could not convince Poroshenko to not take the path of violence, which can’t lead to peace.

Fracking Industry Fumes As Researchers Reveal High Levels Of Leaking Methane – 1 July 2014

RT logoThe latest drilling techniques for obtaining gas, which drill horizontally as opposed to the more traditional vertical drilling, shows a higher rate of leaking methane, according to a study that could spell problems for fracking across the nation.

After poring over data from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection involving more than 41,000 wells, it was determined that more than 6 percent of the active gas wells drilled in the Marcellus region of Pennsylvania “show compromised cement and/or casing integrity,” according to an academic paper published on Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A team of four scientists – working without federal funding – conducted analysis on more than 75,000 state inspections of gas wells performed in Pennsylvania since 2000.

Visa And MasterCard No Longer Have Right To Block Russian Cards – 1 July 2014

RT logoA new Russian law starting July 1 means Visa and MasterCard can no longer block Russian clients. It is part of legislation for a national payment system, and ensures electronic payments and protects Russians from being blocked after an incident in April.

The new national payment system should be up and running in 18 months.

When diplomatic relations were at a low between the US and Russia over Crimea, both credit card companies cut off Russian clients associated with banks sanctioned by the US.

The aftermath of the incident inspired the Kremlin to tighten legislation on foreign credit system operators, which will now have to pay a security fee in order to continue operating in Russia.
