Poverty-Stricken Neighborhoods Almost Triple In US – 11 December 2014

RT logoContrary to the perception in the media, poverty – not gentrification – is booming in US neighborhoods. When such conditions double or triple, areas quickly fall into disrepair, services are cut, and crime escalates, according to a new report.

Media attention tends to focus on poor neighborhoods that are rapidly undergoing gentrification by way of investments and an influx of wealthier new residents, but a paper by cityobservatory.org shows a troubling trend that is more prevalent. The number of poor people living in high-poverty urban neighborhoods has more than doubled, the report found, from two million to four million over the past 40 years. Additionally, the number of high-poverty neighborhoods has nearly tripled from 1,100 to 3,100.

UN: ‘We Won’t Take ‘No’ For An Answer, CIA Torture Must Be Investigated’ – 11 December 2014

RT logoThe release of the so-called CIA torture report will likely create momentum that will lead to justice, UN special rapporteur for torture Juan Mendez told RT. He said the UN will not “take no for an answer” and that each torturous act must be investigated.

The damning report on CIA torture has forced Poland to finally admit that it hosted a secret American prison, with former President Aleksander Kwasniewski coming forward with the revelation. However, Kwasniewski claimed that Polish officials were not informed of the torture tactics being used in the secret jail.

RT asked Mendez to comment on the possible further developments; he insisted that countries complicit in the CIA torture need to carry out their own investigations.

John Ward – Frackers, Washington, OPEC, Brussels And The Central Banks : The Consequences Of Being Led By Smartarsed Idiots – 11 December 2014

midasWill the consequences of an oil-glut be golden?

Consequences. If I had to choose one word that sums up the neoliberal globalist Weltanschauung, it would be ‘consequences’. For those yelling for Friedman with all their might (while telling us we should learn to love the banks) take one of two attitudes to consequences: either they don’t GAF about them, or they’re too thick/up themselves to see them coming. Comcast Sued For Creating Public Hotspots Using Private Wireless Routers – 11 December 2014

RT logoComcast customers filed a class-action lawsuit against the company in federal court, claiming that its business practices result in higher electricity costs, slower internet connections and increased security vulnerabilities for customers.

Through its subsidiary Xfinity Internet Service, Comcast began building a nationwide system of wireless hotspots in June 2013, using the wireless routers the company leases to its customers to create their home Wi-Fi networks. The company’s goal is to compete with wireless providers like Verizon and AT&T without building infrastructure nationwide, according to McAfee, a computer security company. On top of that, Comcast nets $300 million in additional revenue per quarter from monthly hardware rental fees, DSLReports editor Karl Bode notes.

But the two main plaintiffs in the case ‒ Toyer Grear and her daughter, Joycelyn Harris, on behalf of all Xfinity customers ‒ accuse Comcast of using their leased router without their permission, leading to a higher financial burden, lower productivity and increased security vulnerabilities. They filed suit with the US District Court in San Francisco on Thursday.

John Ward – Collapsing Economies : All Quiet On The Eunatic Front – 11 December 2014

JohnWThe Greek economy has shrunk by 0.7% in the latest period.

The French economy has shrunk by 0.8% in the latest period.

UK manufacturing shrank by 0.7% in the same time frame.

All the falls were “larger than expected”.

“Draghi wants out, fed up and stymied by Berlin,” said an ECB insider last week. But as ECB boss Mario tries to pump as much as a trillion euros of liquidity into the euro area, it’s not just the Germans who are cutting up rough: Danish central bank deputy Governor Per Callesen says there is “no limit on how far Denmark is willing to go to defend the krone’s peg to the euro”.

So, with everything going so well, the European Commission decided to award itself a €2bn budget increase….and our brave MEPs approved it with the proviso that the EC pay off its quarter-billion of unpaid debts by 2016. Insisting they find some auditors willing to sign off the budget this time would be nice, but we mustn’t hope for too much.

Another million votes for Nasty Nigel Ithangyoo, kerr-ching.

CIA Paid 2 Torture Experts $81Mn For Their ‘Unique Expertise’ – 11 December 2014

RT logoThe so-called “Torture Report” released this week contains startling facts about the ways in which the CIA treated detainees. Also included, though, are details about the agency’s pricey contracts with those who designed the program described therein.

On Tuesday, the Senate Intelligence Committee finally published its long awaited executive summary concerning the apparent “enhanced interrogation techniques” carried out by CIA agents against suspected Al-Qaeda militants after the September 11 terrorist attacks. And while the report is indeed brimming with grim facts about waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other tactics used by the agency with little affect or oversight, its authors also included a substantial amount of information about the two federal contractors paid millions of dollars by the United States for designing the program of torture that was used for years against individuals held captive in covert overseas prisons.

According to the Senate panel’s long-awaited report, two contractors in particular – codenamed ‘Swigert’ and ‘Dunbar’ – played a pivotal role in advising the CIA as the agency sought tactics to interrogate suspected terrorists in the wake of 9/11. Reports published as far back as almost a decade ago identify those men as James Elmer Mitchell and Bruce Jessen – two psychologists who made bank by designing the torture program and to this day remain on Uncle Sam’s payroll.

Austerity Tax: Tens Of Thousands Protest Againt ‘Regressive’ Irish Govt Water Charges – 11 December 2014

RT logoDownload video (6.06 MB)

An estimated one hundred thousand people took to the streets of Dublin on Wednesday in protest against the Irish government’s planned water charges. Campaigners maintain they are a “regressive” austerity tax that many Irish citizens can’t afford to pay.

The charges form part of the Irish government’s wider debt re-payment strategy in the wake of a grueling bank bailout that cost Irish citizens in excess of €70 billion.

The mass demonstration began at 1pm in Dublin’s Merrion Square, adjacent to Ireland’s parliamentary headquarters.

Campaigners from diverse communities across Ireland marched through Dublin and assembled outside government buildings, where demonstrators listened to political speeches and musical performances.

John Ward – The Cruel & Deliberately Narrow World Of The Dacre Mail – 11 December 2014

dacrePaul Dacre…rum (and rich) sort of cove

I realise that Daily Mail bashing is a somewhat overdone thing, but this site is supposed to be about bollocks deconstruction, and as the paper’s latest piece on UK welfare is bollocks from start to finish, I’m afraid the misleading nature of it needs to be pointed out: Continue reading

NATO Cooperation Must Be Resumed To Prevent Chaos In Afghanistan – Russia’s Chief Of General Staff – 11 December 2014

RT logoThe Afghanistan situation will likely worsen as NATO troops withdraw and focus on fighting ISIS, says Gen. Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of General Staff. He urges the revival of international cooperation in the region to avoid a worst-case scenario.

“Taking into account the decision by the US political leadership to withdraw its contingent from Afghanistan before the end of 2014, we project – with high probability – a significant worsening of the situation in this country, including the transition of control over certain areas to terrorist groups,” Gerasimov said.

The current events in Iraq and Syria, as well as the emergence of the Islamic State group (IS, also known as ISIS/ISIL), may lead to “possible exception of Afghanistan from the focus of attention of [the] West and other states, which may compromise the security of the entire Central Asian region,” he warned.
