Selection is politicized. It’s longstanding policy. It’s no surprise.

Nobel Committee members violate their own rules. Alfred Nobel’s will was clear and unequivocal.

As the media hype over Ebola in America continues to grow, New York’s Kennedy International Airport became the first of five major airports across the country to begin “extensive screening” of passengers arriving from West Africa. Under the program, passengers from the affected countries with fevers or other Ebola symptoms will be isolated and examined by CDC workers before being allowed to proceed. Like the TSA, however, these “extensive screenings” are just another form of security fever at the nation’s airports with even the CDC’s own officials admitting that false positives will occur and the screenings are by no means foolproof. Meanwhile in Spain Teresa Romero, a Spanish nursing aide who is said to have contracted the disease from a repatriated Spanish missionary she was treating, remains in critical condition in a Madrid hospital. The Guardian, for its part, notes with some surprise that less than 24 hours after it was announced that 750 UK troops would be sent to Sierra Leone to help with Ebola containment efforts there it was revealed that the deployments were in fact already in progress and many of the troops were already there.

Do people really know what Northern Soul was like?

You have to worry more than a little bit when your heyday becomes the subject of a movie (and Wikipedia) but the pre-publicity seems to be wrong. However, that is and always has been the nature of the media.

I haven’t seen the movie yet so I can’t comment, but the Wikipedia entry on Northern Soul is all over the place. For one thing, it’s at least five years out in placing the Mod scene in Manchester in “the late 1960s”: and of course, none of us called the film’s featured music Northern Soul: it was Tamla Motown.

Dawn raised a very interesting, complex question, though, and one I find relevant to the current state of our world. Some readers, who haven’t been reading all my Ebola articles (archived here), will respond by saying, “If it isn’t Ebola, then what is it?”

The flaw in that question is the use of the word “it,” which suggests that whatever is making people sick and killing them is one thing.

This is the same flaw present in AIDS, West Nile, SARS, bird flu, Swine Flu. The assumption that one germ is responsible, in each “epidemic,” is false.

The illness and death occurred for many different reasons—and the medical trick involved is pretending a single virus connected all these disparate people

Tens of thousands of people are flooding the streets of cities all over Europe on Saturday in mass rallies against a controversial trade agreement between the US and the EU.Talks on the pact, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), started last February and, having been mostly held behind closed doors, have raised widespread concerns in the European Union and beyond.

Social networks have been mobilized for a mass campaign that has been calling on Europeans and Americans to take action against “the biggest corporate power grab in a decade.”

Down And Out: Pornhub Forced To Take Down Controversial Billboard In Times Square – 11 October 2014

Pornhub has been forced to remove a giant billboard it had erected in New York’s Times Square, with it mysteriously disappearing from the area just hours after it was put up.

In May, Pornhub launched a headline-grabbing design competition, with entrants submitting a variety of images and slogans for their forthcoming adverts, including one depicting a woman questioning a man: “What are you watching?” with the response “Nothing,” prompting the tagline: “The world’s biggest archive of nothing.”

In total, more than 3,000 submissions were offered up by willing entrants.
