Above The Law? UK Govt Attempts To Block Torture, Rendition Lawsuit – 13 February 2015

RT logoGovernment lawyers are arguing in Britain’s Court of Appeal that the case of a Pakistani man who claims he suffered brutal torture at the hands of British and American troops should not be heard in a court of law.

The UK government previously said the case would compromise relations with Washington.

Yunus Rahmatullah claims he was tortured for a decade following his capture by UK Special Forces in Iraq, and his subsequent handover to American soldiers in Afghanistan.

Lawyers from legal charity Reprieve are representing the 32-year-old. The charity says he was kidnapped in Iraq by British forces, tortured and detained in a notorious Abu Ghraib detention facility, and subsequently taken to Afghanistan by American officials.Following a decade of captivity and abuse, Rahmatullah was eventually freed in 2014.

A massive shutdown of America’s supply chain is now in progress because of a labor dispute between dockworkers and their employers. The average dock worker, according to Zero Hedge, makes about $145,000 per year plus some $80,000 per year in benefits, but apparently their overtime pay is insufficient, which has led to widespread strikes at the nation’s busiest ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach.

New US Cyber-Intel Agency: ‘What Aata Will Be Collected And What Will Be Used?’ – 13 February 2015

RT logoMany experts in Silicon Valley have questioned President Obama’s initiative to set up an agency to monitor cyber threats since the US is already spending enough money on spying, says Chris Kitze, the boss of encrypted internet services company Unseen.

The Obama administration has announced plans to set up a new federal spy center – Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center (CTIIC). It will “connect the dots between various cyber threats so the relevant government departments and agencies are aware of these threats in as close to real time as possible,” a senior Obama administration official said on Tuesday, as cited by Reuters.

On Friday, Stanford University is holding the Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection Summit. It is expected US President Barack Obama will attend and announce plans to force government and other organizations to share more data in order to avoid cyber-attacks.

From Minsk To Brussels, It’s All About Germany – 13 February 2015

RT logoGermany holds the key to where Europe goes next. A fragile deal may have been reached on Ukraine, but there’s still no deal with Greece. In both cases, there’s much more than meets the eye.

Let’s start with the grueling Eurogroup negotiation in Brussels over the Greek debt.

Greek officials swear they never received a draft of a possible agreement leaked by Eurogroup bureaucrats to the Financial Times. This draft, crucially, referred to an agreement “amending and extending and successfully concluding,” the current austerity-heavy bailout.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble cut off “amending”. This is the draft that was leaked. But then Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis called Prime Minister Tsipras – and the statement, still not signed, was rejected. So this was a top Tsipras decision.
