MishMikeShedlockAlexis Tsipras, head of the Greek radical-left party Syriza, currently in the lead in national elections, wants a new bailout deal for Greece, including huge debt writeoffs.

Socialist policies aside, on that score Tsipras is correct. Greece cannot possibly pay back the €245 billion it owes creditors.

Contagion Catch 22

Germany fears contagion in the form of demands by other countries that will also want bailout deals or rule changes if Greece gets one. Continue reading

‘Drone Pilot Crisis’: Pentagon Promises Pay Rise To ‘Stressed’ Operators – 16 January 2015

RT logoThe United States Air Force has announced a pay rise incentive for its drone pilots, as officials admit the operators are working under significant stress due to the shortage of unmanned aerial vehicle operating personnel.

During a ‘State of the Air Force’briefingat the Pentagon, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh admitted a significant drone pilot shortage on the force, and promised to increase their pay to encourage experienced personnel to stay.

“The crisis right now is with the pilot force. It is the most stressed part because it is the lowest manned part of the RPA [remotely pilot aircraft] fleet, percentage-wise,” Welsh said. “They have the longest and most expensive training pipeline in that community.”

White House Knew CIA Spied On Senate Torture Investigators – Report – 16 January 2015

RT logoA report by the CIA inspector general allegedly shows that the agency consulted the White House before directing officers to spy on Senate Intelligence Committee staffers investigating the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program.

The inspector general’s report – which was completed in July but only released Wednesday – reveals a Memorandum for the Record written by an agency lawyer, which says that CIA Director John Brennan spoke with the White House Chief of Staff about how sensitive internal documents (the so-called Panetta Review) had wound up in the Senate investigator’s hands, the Huffington Post reported.

The memo’s author cautions the director that speaking with the White House further could be viewed later as the White House interfering in the CIA’s surveillance on Senate staffers.

FCC To Vote On Obama’s Call For Government-Run Internet Next Month – 16 January 2015

RT logoThe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote in February to decide whether municipalities can bypass state laws to provide their own internet service – a policy that President Barack Obama threw his weight behind earlier this week.

The vote is controversial but has support from the Obama administration, and proponents say it would give the public more options and faster service. Many Republicans and opponents argue that permitting such behavior exceeds the FCC’s authority.

Two cities – Chattanooga, Tennessee and Wilson, North Carolina – have petitioned FCC regulators to allow them to build and operate their own internet service. Supporters argue the proposal would allow municipalities to create competition for large internet providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T.

‘CIA Killed Prisoners, Made It Look Like Suicide’ – Guantanamo Guard – 16 January 2015

RT logoA former Guantanamo Bay prison guard and Marine explained in details what makes him believe three problematic detainees were killed at CIA black site in Guantanomo and their death was covered up as a triple suicide.

Army Staff Sergeant Joseph Hickman was on duty at the notorious prison camp when the three men died, and insists the official version of events is “impossible,” he told Vice News.

The three men were Salah Ahmed Al-Salami, 37, from Yemen, Mani Shaman Al-Utaybi, 30, from Saudi Arabia, and Yasser Talal Al-Zahrani, 22, also from Saudi Arabia. None of them had been charged with any crime.

He explained in an incendiary interview with Vice News that the three men would have had to have committed suicide at exactly the same time in a cellblock where guards check on detainees every four minutes.

Verdict Due In Colombian Farmers’ £18Mn High Court Lawsuit Against BP – 16 January 2015

RT logoA British High Court will decide whether UK oil firm BP should pay £18 million to Colombian farmers, following allegations that a faulty pipeline caused environmental devastation in central Colombia and resulted in economic losses for regional farmers.

The Ocensa pipeline, which carries 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily from central Colombia to the state’s Caribbean coastline, was laid in the mid-1990s.

Local subsistence farmers – known as the “campesinos” – say the pipeline’s design was faulty, and has resulted in blocked water sources and streams, and the spread of marshland throughout Colombia.
