Israel Will ‘Never’ Limit Settlement Building In East Jerusalem – Israeli FM – 16 November 2014

Israel will never stop its settlement constructions in occupied East Jerusalem, according to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

“One thing should be clear: we will never accept the definition of building in Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem as settlement activity,” Lieberman told a news conference. “We won’t accept any limitation on building in Jewish areas of [East] Jerusalem.”

Lieberman’s comments come just four days after Israel approved plans to construct some 200 homes in Ramot, despite clashes in the region prompted by settlement expansion.

Argentinian Student Invents Smart Shoe’ To Replace Cane For The Blind – 16 November 2014

An Argentine student has invented shoes with ultrasound sensors which allow people with visual impairments to walk without a cane. The shoes vibrate when the wearer approaches an object.

The new shoes for blind people, dubbed ‘Duspavoni,’ were developed by Juan Manuel Bustamante, a student at Industrial College #4, and presented at the National Science Fair in Buenos Aires on Friday. He says he worked on the project for six months.

“I wish Duspavoni, my creation, could get to revolutionize the lives of people with sight problems, partial or total visual impairment,” he told Ruptly.

The shoes have three ultrasound sensors placed inside the sole – in the frontal, lateral, and back areas. The sensors emit ultrasound waves which are reflected by surrounding objects and come back to the sensor. The shoe vibrates depending on the distance and position of the objects.

UK Teachers Asked To Inform Police On Extremist Students – 16 November 2014

Two county councils in southeast England have asked local teachers to inform police about students suspected of Islamic extremist connections. The request shows authorities’ concern at young Britons joining the Islamic State’s cause.

Earlier in September, Buckinghamshire County Council sent letters to 230 schools, The Sunday Times reported.

“If you have any . . . concerns, especially with regards to young people or their friends, or family members being persuaded to participate in the conflict [in Syria and Iraq] or commit acts of terrorism here, please take the opportunity to talk to one of the police officers you see on patrol in the local community,” says the letter, entitled: “Advice on raised terrorist threat level”.

Dutch Ban Poultry Transport Over ‘Highly Pathogenic’ Bird Flu Strain – 16 November 2014

The Netherlands has discovered a “highly pathogenic” bird flu virus that can be transmitted to humans. The authorities have banned poultry transport throughout the country.

The strain of avian influenza, or bird flu, was found at a battery poultry farm in the village of Hekendorp, in the central province of Utrecht (population 300,000 people), late on Saturday, according to authorities.

“This highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza is very dangerous for bird life,” the government said in a statement. “The disease can be transmitted from animals to humans.”

Israel May Face EU Sanctions For Hampering 2-State Solution – Secret Document – 16 November 2014

Israel could soon find itself in trouble and face the wrath of Brussels: any further attempts to pose obstacles to a two-state solution with occupied Palestine could result in sanctions, Haaretz revealed, citing a ‘confidential’ EU document.

The classified paper was originally intended for internal circulation among the 28 member states, but word of its existence reached Israel after some of its diplomats in the EU leaked the fact to the Foreign Ministry back home.

Although the Israelis could not secure the full text of the document, some important details have come out, thanks to three EU diplomats and two senior Israeli officials.
