John Ward – Analysis: As We Hurtle Towards Cameron’s Red Lights, Who’s In Better Shape – Booming Britain Or Basket-Case France? – 18 November 2014

camdopept

David Cameron, having gone from “Britain is back in business” to “there are red warning signs ahead” in just nine months, nevertheless continues to insist that we are “outperforming everyone else” and “the data prove it”. Are we? Do they? Judge for yourselves. France, we’re constantly told, is a basket-case. Whereas we are ‘growing’ and ‘recovering’, France is all over the place and getting deeper in debt. So you’d expect that to be reflected in exports. If, that is, our ‘growth’ is in any way helping us as a nation.

Well guess what: it isn’t. Continue reading

Amnesty Slams UAE As ‘Deeply Repressive State Beneath Facade Of Glamour’ – 18 November 2014

RT logoThe United Arab Emirates has been accused of an “unprecedented clampdown on dissent,” as more than 100 activists have been jailed since 2011 for calling for political transformation, Amnesty International said in a newly released report.

In an 80-page report titled ‘There is no freedom here’: Silencing dissent in the UAE, the NGO blames the ruling theocracy for distracting the eye of foreigners with the glamorous appearance of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while at the same time conducting harsh violations of human rights.

The probe, published ahead of the F1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, exposes the gap between the public image the UAE tries to present and the harsh reality on the ground.

Republicans, Third Parties Possibly Violated Election Laws By Sharing Data On Twitter – 18 November 2014

RT logoThe National Republican Congressional Committee used secret codes over Twitter to share polling data with third-party organizations, an investigation shows, possibly violating election laws forbidding third-party groups from coordinating with campaigns.

Using techniques normally associated with secret agents, an investigation by CNN showed the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) shared polling data with Super Political Action Committees (Super PACs) by using dead drops and cypher codes.

Reporters found that a normal tweet involved in the process would be posted on public accounts and read, for example: “CA-40/43-44/49-44/44-50/36-44/49-10/16/14-52–>49/476-10s.

Rich Being Left Behind – By Super-Rich – 18 November 2014

RT logoThe wealth gap is widening in the United States, but it’s not just the middle class and poor that are struggling. It turns out the rich are having a hard time keeping up with the changing luxury landscape, and the super-rich are to blame.

Of course, the rich aren’t exactly struggling in today’s economy. However, the rate at which profits have recovered for the upper echelons of the wealthy since the 2008 financial crisis has been extraordinary, especially compared to the buying power of those below them.

According to a New York Times report, wealth accumulation for the top one-hundredth of the one percent (defined as billionaires and nine-figure millionaires) is growing significantly faster than it is for the rich, or your “average” millionaire.
