Selacia – Working With Time Distortions – 20 November 2014

SelaciaThe winds of change have shifted this month, allowing more forward movement and a reprieve from October’s erratic energies. If you’re not yet feeling like it’s smooth sailing, one reason is the time distortion we’re experiencing.

Clock time can tell you one thing, yet your own inner sense of time may have you feeling either behind time or urgently wanting to be ahead. The overall effect can be a sense that you aren’t quite in tune with where you need to be. You may simply want to stop the merry-go-round of time altogether!

You really cannot stop the march of time, of course, but there is plenty that you can do to keep your equilibrium. In fact, in this last stretch of 2014, it is essential that you discover how to make friends with time and change. Continue reading

New Biomarker Detects & Treats Cancer Tumors At Same Time – 20 November 2014

RT logoScientists at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University have created a new biological marker for cancer patients that lights up tumor cells and treats disease with drugs at the same time.

The breakthrough biomarker is a nanophosphor particle ten thousand times smaller than a grain of sand, which lights up when it detects tumor cells to allow scientists to take a better look.

This is the first time we are able to do bio-imaging, and potentially target the delivery of drugs at the same time, as proven in small animal tests,” Professor Joachim Loo, a nanotechnology and bio-imaging expert, said in a NTU statement. “Our breakthrough will open up new doors in the various fields of nanomedicine, bio-imaging and cancer therapeutics.”

Professor Loo said particles that are used for bio-imaging currently on the market are only good for imaging and not able to release drugs or sense the environment that is around the tumor. He said the nanoparticle is coated with a layer of anti-cancer drugs that can be released, if necessary.

The President of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is no fan of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, telling RT’s Ben Swann that congressional authorization of the project would be “an act of war against our people.”

In fact, Sioux tribe president Cyril Scott said the pipeline would cut right through the “sovereign nation” of the Native American tribe in South Dakota. The House of Representatives passed a measure last week to fast-track the project, provoking a strong response from Scott.

Police Must Respect Protesters’ Rights In Ferguson – HRW – 20 November 2014

RT logoHuman Rights Watch said Wednesday that the police in Ferguson, Missouri must allow peaceful protest after the coming decision by a grand jury on the Michael Brown case, and that law enforcement abuses like those of August are unacceptable.

A grand jury is soon due to decide on whether to indict Darren Wilson, a Ferguson police officer for the fatal shooting of Michael brown an African American teenager, on the 9 August 2014.

If the jury decides, as is deemed likely, not to indict the officer, then protest is quite likely. In fact the governor of the state Jay Nixon declared a 17 day state of emergency on November 17 fearing the “possibility of expanded unrest”.

Feds Approve Fracking In Massive Washington National Forest – 20 November 2014

RT logoA federally sanctioned decision announced this week will mean fracking can soon occur within portions of the largest national forest in the eastern half of the United States.

On Tuesday, the US Forest Service greenlighted a plan that installs rules that will let energy companies conduct hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, within the massive multistate George Washington National Forest.

Environmentalists had largely tried to keep the forest free of fracking operations, in which chemicals are pumped deep below the ground in order to extract natural gas, arguing against the potential polluting of the area’s water supply and other unknown risks that remain possible repercussions from the relatively new and often controversial drilling practice.

Laura Bruno – Fiona Broome – How Shakespeare Changed Everything – 20 November 2014

laura-of-the-rocksHow Shakespeare changed everythingby Fiona Broome

Shakespeare’s plays changed almost everything that we think about faeries.

Before Shakespeare wrote about them, most people were terrified of faeries.  One of the most frightening was a faerie called Robin Goodfellow.  He was blamed for bad luck, poor harvests, and even death.

Then, Shakespeare suggested that faeries might not be evil… just mischievous.

During Shakespeare’s era, that was a radical idea. Continue reading

2 New Subatomic Particles Found By CERN Scientists – 20 November 2014

RT logoCERN’s Large Hadron Collider scientists have discovered two new subatomic particles each made from three quarks bound together by the strong force. They were predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particle physics.

Officials at the lab on the French-Swiss border known by its French acronym CERN announced the discovery in a statement Wednesday and submitted a paper reporting the finding to Physical Review Letters.

The particles are part of the baryon family and are made from three quarks bound together – one beauty (b), one strange (S), and one down (d) quark – and are within the so-called “Standard Model” theory, which explains the building blocks of matter.

The particles are known as Xi_b’- and Xi_b*- and although scientists had predicted their existence they had never actually been seen before. A related particle called Xi_b*0 was found in 2012.

“Nature was kind and gave us two particles for the price of one. The Xi_b’- is very close in mass to the sum of its decay products: if it had been just a little lighter, we wouldn’t have seen it at all using the decay signature that we were looking for,” said Matthew Charles, of the LPNHE laboratory at Paris VI University, a CERN collaborator.

Mark Paffrath, a Navy veteran, was fired and branded a “terrorist” for taking pictures of dozens of Homeland Security vehicles parked at the hotel where he used to work in Ferguson, as grand jury decision on Michael Brown shooting is due, he told RT.

Protesters are already gathering in and around St Louis for what they believe will be no indictment decision for the police officer who shot 18-year-old Ferguson resident Michael Brown.

The Department of Homeland Security is preparing, too. Mark Paffrath, who worked for the Drury hotel chain, about a 30-minute drive from Ferguson, managed to take photos of the vehicles the DHS in the hotel’s parking lot and posted them on social media.

It cost him his job.

Steve Lendman – Keystone XL Pipeline: Down But Not Out – 20 November 2014

StevelendmanOn November 18, Senate Democrats derailed Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline plans. For now.
Republicans controlling next year’s 114th Congress vowed to continue fighting for passage. It remains to be seen what follows.
Obama is veto-shy. Twice only so far. Compared to GW Bush’s 12. Including pocket vetoes. Clinton’s 37. Reagan’s 78.
Dwight Eisenhower’s 181. Truman’s 250. FD Roosevelt’s astonishing 635. Overriding presidential vetoes seldom happens.
Throughout US history, presidents vetoed legislation 2,564 times. Overridden 110 times. Around 4% of the time.
