Europe Should Decide Its Fate Without Using US ‘Disservices’ – Russian Duma Speaker – 9 December 2014

State Duma chairman, Sergey Naryshkin, has reiterated his advice to European countries to rule themselves and stop heeding meddlesome US advice that does more harm than good.

Naryshkin told reporters that currently various US representatives are taking active part in a number of European political organizations, where they enjoy full members’ rights. In this capacity, the US is affecting decisions concerning the fates of people and states thousands of kilometers from its borders.

“Isn’t it time for European countries to take their fate into their own hands and stop applying for the “services” of those who can only instigate conflicts ending in violence, destruction,humanitarian disasters and human casualties,” said the Duma speaker, as cited by RIA Novosti.

He also added that Russia is a European state and so it is concerned by US attacks on international law and fundamental European values. “We will ask our European colleagues to draw practical conclusions from this whole situation for the sake of peace and security on our common continent – the European continent,” Naryshkin promised.

80% Catalans Say Yes To Independence In Symbolic ‘Referendum’ – 10 November 2014

An overwhelming majority of Catalans have said “yes” to independence and secession from the central Spanish government in Madrid in a highly-anticipated but symbolic referendum poll on Sunday.

Some 80.72 percent voted to form a state independent of Spain, Joana Ortega, vice president Catalonia said shortly after midnight, with over two million Catalans reportedly turning out for the unofficial referendum. Ortega could not immediately give an official turnout rate since there was no formal electoral roll for some 5.4 million registered Catalan voters.

Voters were given two questions to answer, “Do you want Catalonia to be a state?” was the first and in the case of a positive response, voters were asked: “Do you want Catalonia to be an independent state?”

‘Old Boys Club’: 217,000 Sign Petition Demanding Place For Greens In TV Election Debates – 6 November 2014

An online petition calling on British broadcasters to include the Green Party in a series of TV debates in the run-up to the next general election has attracted a surge in support, and now has over 217,000 signatories.

Launched in early October by Green Party advocate Robyn Meadwell, the petition warns the exclusion of the Greens from the upcoming televised debates is unrepresentative of popular opinion and an insult to women in politics, and throughout the wider UK.

“By excluding a party with a female leader, we are sending a clear message to the public – politics is still an old boys club,” the petition says. It directly addresses the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky.

EU To Give Ukraine Another €8Bn To Help Reform – 12 September 2014

The European Union is to provide Ukraine with €8 billion to carry out reforms, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said Friday.

“We are convinced that this Agreement (EU – Ukraine Association Agreement) will promote further economic growth and modernization of the Ukrainian economy. Eight billion euro will be transferred to Ukraine to stabilize the economy. But this support is not unconditional. It is based on the expectation that the country will continue to follow the path of reformation,” RBC quotes Schultz.

The required reforms would include electoral law, a comprehensive constitutional reform, elimination of corruption, and the respect of human rights and minority rights, Schultz explained.

In turn Aleksey Ulyukayev, the Russian Minister of Economic Development said that if Ukraine proceeds with the EU Association Agreement as of November 1, Russia will respond with the introduction of import tariffs on Ukrainian goods.

China Secures Venezulan Oil And Gold Deals, As President Visits L.America – 22 July 2014

Chinese President Xi Jinping has signed a row of oil and mineral deals with Venezuela. The Chinese leader is on a four-country tour of Latin America aimed to increasing influence in the region.

The 38 economic agreements are related to the production and development of Venezuelan oil and agriculture, as well as social and cultural expansion, says the BBC. The deals provides a credit line of $4 billion in return for Venezuelan oil and oil products, as well as allocating $691 million to explore Venezuela’s gold and copper reserves, and an agreement to develop the countries’ third jointly-owned satellite.

China is the second-largest market for Venezuelan oil after the United States.

Global Totalitarianism: Change Not Forbidden, Change Is Impossible – 8 July 2014

My apparently weird thesis is: the neoliberal system ruling directly or indirectly the greater part of the world is producing a disastrous anthropological mutation that is leading to a kind of planetary totalitarianism.

First let’s clarify the lexis. Neoliberalism is generally an economic philosophy established in the 20th century by figures like Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman. Typical of that thought is the belief that the only unifying feature of society is the individual, together with the faith that the free market can regulate society better by itself than any external regulation. Neoliberals are always in favor of any deregulation and privatization.

Historically the market’s auto-regulation is known as the classical liberal theory of the invisible hand. Usually it is attributed to Adam Smith, although the Scottish economist used it very rarely and apparently with a more restricted meaning. Anyway, the invisible hand is now forming an integral part of the neoliberal theory, which considers any public intervention in the economy to be the work of the devil.
