Captain Of Missing MH370 Flight Identified As Prime Suspect – Report – 22 June 2014

The captain of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is now the prime suspect in the ongoing investigation into the plane’s mysterious disappearance, after police found suspicious evidence in his house, according to a media report.

More than three months since the plane disappeared over Southeast Asia, Malaysia’s police force said that following intelligence checks into all people on board Captain Zaharie Shah, 53, was the only one who raised suspicion, according to a report published by The Sunday Times.

Police came to this conclusion after finding a flight simulator in his home with drills rehearsing a flight far out into the southern Indian Ocean and a landing on an island with a short runway, the media report said. The files were deleted from the computer, but experts were able to retrieve them.

Confirmed: 39 women Illegally Sterilized In California Prisons – 22 June 2014

Four California prisons illegally sterilized 39 women over a six-year period, a damning new report by the California State Auditor reveals.

Of the 144 inmates who underwent bilateral tubal ligations, commonly referred to as having your tubes tied, from fiscal years 2005-06 to 2012-13, auditors found nearly one-third were performed without lawful consent.

In 27 cases, the inmate’s physician – the individual who would perform the procedure in a hospital, or an alternate physician — did not sign the required consent form indicating the patient was of sound mind and understood the permanence of the operation.

For 18 of the 39 inmates, potential violations of the waiting period were noted between when the inmate consented to the procedure and when the sterilization surgery actually took place.

HRW: IDF Threatened Palestinian Whose Camera Captured Teen Killings, Confiscated Footage – 22 June 2014

“We will squish you like a bug,” the IDF told a Palestinian whose video showed Israeli soldiers shooting two teenagers. The man was stripped of his ID, interrogated, threatened and ordered to remove his security cameras in 24 hours, HRW reported.

“Israeli military officers berated Fakher Zayed, 47, for sharing the security videos with human rights groups, claimed he had lied and fabricated evidence, and threatened to bring unspecified legal actions against him if he did not remove the security cameras,” the human rights organization stated in a press release.

Zayed claimed that on June 17, four Israeli military vehicles with two dozen soldiers came to his carpentry shop in Beitunia, a town near the West Bank’s de facto capital of Ramallah.

Aussie Govt. Under Fire For Offering Up To $10K To Asylum Seekers To Go Home – 22 June 2014

Australian opposition and human rights groups have blasted the country’s government after it reportedly increased by several times the payoffs to asylum seekers who voluntary go home, while imposing tough restrictions on their stay.

Australia is facing an influx of people from poorer countries and has been increasingly tough over the past few years on refugees coming on unsanctioned boats. Currently the refugees are held in detention camps in Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island and the tiny Pacific state of Nauru, and are expected to be resettled in those countries if their claims are deemed valid.

The asylum seekers are offered money if they choose to go back to where they came from. But many Australians were surprised to learn how much exactly. According to a Sydney Morning Herald report on Saturday, up to A$10,000 (US$9,400).

ISIS Militants Seize 4 Iraqi Towns In Just 2 Days – 22 June 2014

The militants of the Al-Qaeda splinter group ISIS, also known as ISIL, managed to capture three new towns and two border crossings on Sunday, according to eyewitnesses, officials, and security sources.

“Army troops withdrew from Rawah, Anah and Rutba this morning and ISIS moved quickly to completely control these towns,” an unnamed military intelligence official told Reuters after the three had fallen.

The militants captured the three towns in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, Reuters reported. Later in the day, militants seized two border crossings – one with Jordan and one with Syria, Iraqi officials told AP.

Poroshenko Warns Of ‘Detailed Plan B’ If Ukraine Ceasefire Fails – 22 June 2014

If his current proposal for a truce, which came into force on Friday, fails to bring results, Ukraine’s newly elected president Petro Poroshenko warns he has an alternative “detailed plan” of regaining control over south-eastern Ukraine.

“Peaceful scenario – it is our plan A,” Poroshenko said in a statement on his website. “But those who expect to use the peace talks only to gain time to regroup, should know that we have a detailed plan B. I am not going to talk about it now, because I believe that our peace plan will work.”

The ceasefire in eastern Ukraine took effect on June 20 and will last until June 27, the day Kiev plans to sign the EU Association agreement.
