On June 4, 1963, a little known attempt was made to strip the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the government at interest. On that day President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order No. 11110 that returned to the U.S. government the power to issue currency, without going through the Federal Reserve. Mr. Kennedy’s order gave the Treasury the power “to issue silver certificates against any silver bullion, silver, or standard silver dollars in the Treasury.” This meant that for every ounce of silver in the U.S. Treasury’s vault, the government could introduce new money into circulation. In all, Kennedy brought nearly $4.3 billion in U.S. notes into circulation. The ramifications of this bill are enormous.

Cyber Attack On Government Contractor Exposes Undercover Agents – 23 August 2014

Multiple undercover investigators had their personal data exposed to hackers after a cyber attack struck a key contractor of the Department of Homeland Security in early August.

In fact, the data breach in question has affected the data of at least 25,000 workers, a number that could go up even further in the coming days.

According to Reuters, when the US Investigative Services (USIS) was hit with a cyber attack in the first week of August, hackers were able to gain access to extremely personal information connected to DHS employees, Immigration and Customs Enforcement workers, and Customs and Border Protection units. The sensitive data included Social Security numbers, criminal history, and the names and addresses of friends and family.

34 Sailors Kicked Out Of US Navy For Nuclear Cheating Ring, More Suspects Remain – 23 August 2014

A seven-year-long cheating scandal at a US Navy nuclear power training site is again rocking the boat. At least 34 sailors are being kicked out of the military branch for their roles in the long-running scam, the Navy announced Wednesday.

Adm. John M. Richardson, the officer in charge of the Navy’s nuclear reactors program, told the Associated Press that another 10 sailors are accused of being “at the center” of the fraud involving qualifications testing, and remain under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) for their parts. The ring went undetected for at least seven years, starting in 2007, until it came to light in February. Now it appears that more people were involved than previously suspected.

The 34 sailors ‒ approximately one-fifth of all the 150 qualified operators in Charleston, South Carolina ‒ removed from the nuclear power program are all enlisted personnel. They are all being administratively discharged from the Navy, the AP reported. Initially the group was only decertified. Another two who were implicated as “minimal” participants had their non-criminal punishment suspended due to their “strong potential for rehabilitation.”

Argentina Accuses US Judge Of Being ‘Imperialist’ After Debt Plan Ruling – 23 August 2014

The Argentine cabinet chief, Jorge Capitanich, accused a US judge who ruled that Buenos Aires’s debt restructuring plan is illegal of having an ‘imperialist’ attitude after he backed hedge funds that refuse to take reduced returns on Argentinian bonds.

US District Judge Thomas Griesa said Thursday that a law announced This week by the Argentine president Cristina Fernandez to take control of its own debt repayments to US bond-holders would violate previous orders he had imposed favoring creditors who refused to accept restructured bonds.

Judge Greisa imposed the orders following Argentina’s 2002 default of $100 billion of debt.

Griesa, a federal judge in Manhattan, described Argentina’s actions as “lawless”, but stopped short of finding Buenos Aires in contempt of court.

National Guard Begins Withdrawing From Ferguson After 2nd Calm Night In A Row – 23 August 2014

Ferguson, Missouri remained relatively calm for the second night in a row. With only isolated arrests Wednesday and Thursday nights, a drawdown of the National Guard troops assigned with keeping the peace began Friday.

“[A] sense of normalcy” returned to the area along West Florissant Avenue ‒ the epicenter of continued protests against the police ‒ on Thursday. “People strolled to stores and city buses were back on schedule,” USA Today reported.

Local clergy and civic leaders worked to keep the events of the night orderly, urging protesters to remain peaceful and to return to their homes after dark, the Associated Press wrote. Demonstrations have occurred since the death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson last Saturday.

Outgoing UN Rights Chief Fires Broadside At UN Security Council – 23 August 2014

UN Human Rights chief Navi Pillay fired a parting shot at the UN Security Council before stepping down, saying that governments are putting short-term goals and national interests ahead of human suffering, global peace and security.

As she prepares to leave her post as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights after six years in her post, she said in her final address: “I firmly believe that greater responsiveness by this council would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.”

“Even after violence has broken out, international actors can help broker and enforce peace,” she added.
