‘No Decision’ On UK Strikes Against ISIS In Iraq Or Syria – 23 September 2014

Britain remains undecided as to whether it will join US and Arab coalition airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) targets within Syria. Meanwhile, consensus is growing among UK MPs in support of Iraq strikes.

America, along with Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, used fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk cruise missiles in Syrian raids that began early on Tuesday.

The death toll has risen to 50, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters. At least eight are believed to be civilians, three of them children.

‘Stop Arming Israel!’ Scottish Pro-Palestinian Activists Occupy Israel-Linked Arms Factory In Glasgow – 23 September 2014

Pro-Palestinian activists in Glasgow have gained access to the factory of a leading multinational defence company with links to an Israeli drone manufacturer.

Thales UK is working with Elbit Systems to make the next generation of Watchkeeper drones, a contract worth £1 billion.

Around 15 activists from the Glasgow Palestine Action Network (GPAN) attended the protest, with around five people climbing on the factory doors, while others blocked the factory doors during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The roof’s occupiers hung banners from the factory, condemning UK involvement in trading and developing arms with Israel.

Cameron And Iran’s Rouhani To Discuss Anti-ISIS Strategy At Historic Meeting – 23 September 2014

British Prime Minister David Cameron is to hold historic talks on combating ISIS with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani – the first meeting of British and Iranian leaders since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Cameron will meet Rouhani at the United Nations in New York this week, although Downing Street has not disclosed any further details.

The meeting represents a further thaw in the relationship between the two countries since Rouhani came to power in 2013. While the UK still expresses concerns regarding Iran’s human rights record, it has reopened the Iranian embassy in the UK and agreed to restart diplomatic talks.

The meeting comes as the United States along with a number of allies in the Middle East launched the first air strikes against militant jihadist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL), who have taken control of swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq in the past few months.

Pentagon: F-22s Used In Combat For First Time In Syria – 23 September 2014

This week’s strike against Islamic State militants in Syria by the United States marked the first time that the Pentagon has deployed its F-22 Raptor jets into combat, the Defense Department acknowledged on Tuesday.

Lt. Gen. William Mayville, the director of ops for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged during a Department of Defense briefing on Tuesday morning that the strikes launched by the US hours earlier were the first ever to involve F-22s — a fifth-generation aircraft that’s capable of dropping precisions bombs on targets from 15 miles away.

“What we were looking at were the effects we wanted to see on the target areas and what platforms in the region would be best suited to do that,” Mayville told reporters at the Pentagon. “We had a large menu of targets to strike from and we chose from there. Really it’s less the platform then the effects we seek.”

66% Jump In 4 Days: SNP May Become UK’s Third Biggest Party – 23 September 2014

Nearly 17,000 people have swelled the ranks of Alex Salmond’s Scottish National Party (SNP) since the referendum vote last Thursday, putting the party’s membership ahead of the UK-wide Liberal Democrats.

Salmond’s ‘Yes Scotland’ campaign narrowly lost the vote for Scottish independence with 45 percent against the ‘No’ campaign’s 55 percent, from a record-breaking voter turnout of 84 percent.

Since the vote, Salmond has declared his intention to resign as Scotland’s First Minister. Yet SNP membership rocketed to 47,746 by Tuesday morning, compared to 25,642 at 5pm last Thursday. The 66 percent rise makes the SNP the UK’s third-biggest political party.
