EU Allows More GM Crops To Be Imported Following 1.5-Yr Hiatus – 25 April 2015

The European Union has given the green light to start importing 10 new types of genetically modified crops for the first time since 2013. Two types of flowers have also been cleared, amid heated debates over amendments to the EU approval process.

The crops, which include maize, soybeans, cotton and oilseed rape will be authorized for human food and animal feed for the next 10 years, the European Commission announced on Friday.

The GM crops by Monsanto, BASF and Bayer CropScience will principally be used to feed cattle in Europe, according to Reuters.

The Commission also gave 10-year extensions to seven other crops produced by Bayer, Monsanto, Dupont’s Pioneer and Dow AgroSciences, which had previously been approved. Two types of carnations, developed by Suntory Holdings, have also been cleared for import into the EU.

Statue Of Liberty Evacuated After Suspicious Package Reported – 25 April 2015

The Statue of Liberty was evacuated on Friday after authorities were alerted to a suspicious package, and bomb squads were dispatched to Liberty Island as security concerns heightened.

Visitors of the iconic New York City monument wrote on Twitter early Friday afternoon that they were being evacuated from the site and ushered onto boats due to an apparent bomb scare.

“Please cooperate ladies and gentlemen and step quickly through the gap (in the barricades) to the rear of the vessel,” a loudspeaker announcement instructed visitors to Liberty Island, according to eyewitness footage. “There is more seating available up top so please do not stop or hesitate on the gangway.”

Air Force Rushes To Repair A-10 After ‘Catastrophic’ Engine Failure In ISIS Territory – 25 April 2015

An A-10 aircraft operated by the United States military suffered from a “catastrophic” engine failure during a routine refueling mission and was diverted to a base in Iraq to be repaired, the Pentagon says.

The US Air Forceacknowledgedthis week that a maintenance repair team was deployed to Al Asad Air Base in Iraq recently after the malfunction sidelined an A-10C Thunderbolt II. The Air Force did not note the specific date of the incident, but described the glitch as “catastrophic.”

The jet was not involved in a combat mission when the failure occurred, the Air Force said, but had to be diverted to a base in hostile territory where an expedited repair was ordered to fix the plane’s number one engine.

‘US National Guard’s Drills In Public Aimed At Dealing With Domestic ‘Dissidents’’ – 25 April 2015

US Army field manuals admit that public drills are aimed at dealing with political dissidents that need to be “reeducated to gain a new appreciation of US policies,” Paul Joseph Watson, Infowars Editor at Large told RT’s In the Now.

RT: The police in the US are accused more than ever now of militarization. A video has appeared online showing armed national guardsmen conducting exercises near a children’s playground in Virginia. We contacted the infantry brigade – here’s what they told us: coordination was made with the Staunton Police Department, these are freshers who are training on basic military subjects like drill and ceremonies, basic first aid, military courtesies and the guns they carry are replicas. What is wrong with it?

Paul Joseph Watson: What is wrong with that is the fact that they are doing it not on base but in public. And we have to put this in the context of a spate of videoswhich have emerged in the recent weeks with not only National Guard but US Army troops in some cases working with police conducting these public drills which in some cases, not in this case but others, are based around crowd control and civil unrest. And the line they always give us that it’s designed for overseas combat, foreign operations. But if you then read the US Army’s actual manuals that they release, it’s clear that it’s for dual purpose, it’s for “dissidents” on US soil. So the media regurgitate this claim that all these drills are just foreign operations. Yet they are doing it in public, in plain sight, while privately in their own field manuals admitting that it’s to take on “dissidents within the continental US.” That’s why people are concerned about it and a lot of our audience is National Guard or former or current US military. They are concerned about these public drills. They didn’t enlist to police the US people which is a lot of this seems to be geared towards.

HSBC Threatens To Leave Britain After Mild Banking Reforms – 25 April 2015

Global banking giant HSBC says it could move its headquarters out of the UK in the wake of regulatory and structural reforms put in place after the 2008 financial crisis.

The firm’s board has requested that management “look at where the best place is for HSBC to be headquartered in this new environment.

“The question is a complex one and it is too soon to say how long this will take or what the conclusion will be; but the work is underway,” the bank added.

While the question of where the under-fire financial behemoth will go is still open, experts predict a move to the Far East.

A bill that would heavily diminish the effect of federal programs that militarize local police was signed into law on Thursday.

Introduced by Rep. Nicholas Schwaderer (R-Superior), House Bill 330 (HB330) bans state or local law enforcement from receiving significant classes of military equipment from the Pentagon’s “1033 Program.” It passed by a 46-1 vote in the state Senate and by a 79-20 vote in the state House. On Thursday, Gov. Steve Bullock signed it into law.

Ash Turns Chile Town Into Post-Apocalyptic Scene After Calbuco Eruption – 25 April 2015

A thick layer of ash has covered the streets of the town of Puerto Varas and triggered an evacuation on Thursday after the surprise eruption of Calbuco volcano in Chile’s south.

Winds have carried most of the giant ash cloud over the Andes Mountains into neighboring Argentina, but the Chilean tourist town of Puerto Varas was also seriously affected, despite being nearly 30km away from the action.

The ash covered the roads, rooftops and cars in the town, raising health concerns among the local population.

Anti-Austerity Occupiers To Be Ejected From Manchester Albert Square – 25 April 2015

Homelessness and anti-austerity campaigners who have formed a protest camp outside the city council chambers in Manchester’s Albert Square could be gone within hours after losing a court battle to remain.

After trying to overturn a court order on Friday, the demonstrators, who are protesting the rise of homelessness in the city as a result of austerity measures, are faced with a stark choice between moving on voluntarily or being forcibly removal.

Recent weeks have seen a flurry of legal exchanges between council bosses and occupiers.

The city council had won an injunction to eject the protesters, which was appealed by those in the camp earlier this week.
