US To Pay Largest Native American Nation $554 Mn In Landmark Settlement – 25 September 2014

The Obama administration will pay the Navajo Nation a record $554 million to settle claims by the most populous Native American tribe that funds and natural resources on its reservation were mismanaged by the US government for decades.

The agreement will be formally signed on Friday at Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the Navajo reservation, the largest in the US by land mass.

The accord was borne from litigation that accused the government of mishandling Navajo funds and natural resources on its more than 14 million acres across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, all held in trust for the tribe and leased out for purposes of farming, energy development, logging, and mining. The Navajo claims date back as far as 50 years.

US Attorney General Eric Holder To Resign – 25 September 2014

Eric Holder, the attorney general of the United States, plans to resign from office, White House officials said Thursday.

Holder, the first African-American to serve the Department of Justice’s top post, will officially announce his resignation plans later on Thursday, sources reported. He has served as US attorney general since 2009 after being appointed by President Barack Obama.

According to ABC News, a Justice Dept. official said:

“At a formal announcement later today, the attorney general plans to express his personal gratitude to the president for the opportunity to serve in his administration and to lead the Justice Department, which he will call the ‘greatest honor of my professional life.’ He will note he has loved the Justice Department since, when he was a boy, he watched how, under Attorney General Kennedy, the Department played a leadership role in advancing the civil rights movement. During his tenure as Attorney General, Holder has had Attorney General Kennedy’s portrait in his conference room.”

US Imposes Anti-Terror Financial Sanctions On 21 Individuals, 3 Companies – 25 September 2014

The White House has imposed sanctions on 21 people and 3 entities funding terrorism, freezing assets and barring them from any American financial dealings in an effort “to degrade and destroy terrorist access to financing.”

“Today’s broadly scoped designations will disrupt efforts by ISIL, al-Nusra Front, Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah to raise, transport and access funds that facilitate foreign terrorist fighters,” David Cohen, the Treasury undersecretary for terrorism financing said in a statement on Wednesday.

The announcement of the sanctions were a follow up to airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq as well s the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of resolution to preemptively nip in the bud financial activities and mobility of terrorists believed to be aiding efforts in the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa.

‘Don’t Bomb Iraq & Syria!’ Stop The War To Protest At Downing Street – 25 September 2014

Anti-war activists have called an emergency protest outside Downing Street on Thursday evening, as Prime Minister David Cameron says the UK is ready to “play its part” in airstrikes on ISIS targets in Iraq.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Cameron called Islamic State formerly known as ISIS or ISIL) an “evil against which the whole world must unite”.

Referring to the 2003 Iraq invasion by George W. Bush and Tony Blair, the current PM said “past mistakes” must not be an “excuse” for inaction and that leaders must not be “frozen with fear”.

I have requested that Parliament be recalled to debate the UK response to the Iraqi Govt's request for support against ISIL.
