Ferguson Aftermath: CaliforniaCity Tells Cops To Get Rid Of Armored Vehicle – 28 August 2014

The city council of Davis, California has decided to drop the local police department’s Pentagon-supplied armored vehicle following worries from the community that it could be used against demonstrations, as was the case in Ferguson, Missouri this month.

The Davis City Council adopted a resolution this week that orders the city to come up with a plan to drop the MRAP (mine-resistant ambush protected), originally developed for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and acquired by the city through a government surplus program. The armored vehicles have been distributed to local law enforcement agencies, especially after the wars wound down and the Pentagon’s budget was reduced.

A large crowd largely opposed to the city’s MRAP gathered at the city council meeting for the resolution vote. A petition had circulated around town calling for Davis officials to get rid of or repurpose the MRAP.

Cable Collaborator: BT Accused Of Aiding US Drone Strikes – 28 August 2014

The British government has been asked to investigate whether the country’s major provider of telecommunications networks and services, BT, is aiding US drone strikes.

According to a complaint filed by the charity group Reprieve, BT has built a military internet cable connecting US air force facilities in Northamptonshire to a base for unmanned craft in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa.

The human rights group alleges that the $23 million (£13 million) fiber-optic circuit built by BT in 2012 was installed to facilitate air strikes in Yemen and Somalia by US Air Force drones.

Reprieve investigator Kevin Lo said: “Between this new evidence, and BT’s claim to work with ‘any government that pays the bills’, it’s now clear there are serious questions to be asked about BT’s possible support for US drone strikes. The government should reopen its investigation as soon as possible, and demand some answers on behalf of the strikes’ civilian victims.”
