GMO Potato Seeks FDA Approval, Opponents Say Safety Risks Remain – 29 January 2015

A new genetically modified potato is closer than ever to arriving in American grocery stores, but while advocates claim it can actually reduce the risk of cancer, opponents say not nearly enough is known to ensure public safety.

Created by the J. R. Simplot Company, ‘Innate’ potatoes were created by inserting extra genes into them – genes that are modified but that otherwise exist naturally in the potato. Through genetic modification using RNA interference (RNAi), scientists used these genes to shut down a few of the potato’s other original genes – a process called gene silencing.

Some of the genes being shut down are those that cause bruising and create acrylamide when potatoes are baked or fried. Acrylamide is an amino acid which, in tests conducted on rats, has increased the animals’ risk of getting cancer.

Former Los Alamos Scientist Sentenced In Plot To Sell Nuclear Secrets To Venezuela – 29 January 2015

A former Los Alamos nuclear scientist caught in a sting operation was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to help Venezuela develop nuclear weapons in exchange for “money and power.” He also advised dropping a bomb over NYC.

“I’m going to be the boss with money and power,” Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni, a naturalized US citizen from Argentina, is heard telling his wife in a secret FBI recording released before the sentencing on Wednesday.

Back in 2013, Mascheroni and his wife both pleaded guilty to helping Venezuela develop nuclear potential after dealings with an undercover FBI agent posing as a representative in Venezuela. Marjorie Roxby Mascheroni has already been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for conspiring with her husband.

Expanded Surveillance Protections For Journalists Proposed In Montana – 29 January 2015

A Montana lawmaker is proposing a new bill that would expand surveillance protections for journalists by prohibiting government entities from requesting data on reporters through internet providers.

The state already has a media shield law, but the new bill would close a major loophole which provides no protections for journalists who use the services of electronic communications providers. For example, while a court cannot make a reporter reveal his or her email correspondence with a source, it could request a journalist’s emails from a provider such as Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo.

Lake Baikal’s Water Level Nears Critical Low, Conservation Advised – 29 January 2015

The water level at Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest body of freshwater, is at its lowest in decades and nearing a critical threshold, authorities in Russia’s Irkutsk region warn. Residents are advised to cut down their water and electricity consumption.

The power-saving and water-preserving mode is recommended due to a decrease in Lake Baikal’s water level, which now stands at 456.07 meters above sea level, according to the Emergencies Ministry.

The critical indicator for the lake’s minimum acceptable water level for economic activity is set at 456 meters. A similar situation was recorded back in 1982, when the level of Lake Baikal dropped to a record low of 455.27 meters.

DEA Admits Plan To Monitor License Plates At Gun Shows, Says It Was ‘Never Authorized’ – 29 January 2015

The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) considered tracking license plates at gun shows to develop a database of attendees, according to a newly released email. The Justice Department has a similar nationwide database compiled from surveillance technology.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) obtained an internal DEA email outlining the proposal to monitor parking lots outside a Phoenix, Arizona area gun show in 2009 by using automated license-plate readers (ALPRs). The intent was to aid gun-trafficking investigations.

The 2009 email is heavily redacted so as not to disclose the sender, recipient or much of the text beyond a single sentence: “DEA Phoenix Division office is working closely with ATF [the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives] on attacking the guns going to [redacted] and the guns shows, to include programs/operation with [license-plate readers] at the gun shows.”
