Protesting Across The Globe: What Took People To The Streets In 2014 – 31 December 2014

RT logoCalls for independence, pleas to stop war, objection to mass surveillance, outrage over police brutality, and much more drove people to the streets in 2014. RT takes a look at what prompted millions around the globe to rise up.

Euromaidan and eastern Ukraine backfire

What is now known worldwide as Euromaidan can surely be named the protest of the year. The initially peaceful demonstrations which started as a reaction to then-President Viktor Yanukovich’s refusal to sign the EU association deal last year became violent in 2014.

2014 As We Saw It: Top 10 NEWS Videos Of The Year – 31 December 2014

RT logoFrom planes to protests to presidents – and even the odd pitched battle. Plenty of videos gave us pause for thought in 2014, bringing a new dimension to news stories from around the world.

Immediate aftermath of MH17 crash

Amateur video surfaced showing the horrific aftermath of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board in July. Shocked residents can be seen descending on the scene as a massive pillar of black smoke fills the sky. People rush about carrying buckets of water to put out small fires in the vicinity caused by the burning debris. Others are just walking around the site in a state of apparent shock. Responsibility for shooting down the plane has been hotly contested by Kiev and rebel forces. It has also triggered the deterioration of already-strained relations between Moscow and Western governments, which blame Russia for supplying the rebels, whom they blame for the disaster.

annieleatMs Leat has carefully ensured that all we get is tantalising shots of picture books, jewellery, handbags and bums, but not her face. This proves beyond any reasonable doubt the enormous power she wields. She runs the world….and yet nobody knows anything about her. Continue reading

US Lifts 40-Year Ban On Oil Exports – 31 December 2014

RT logoThe US has decided to lift a ban on crude oil exports introduced in the 1970’s. The Obama administration is allowing several companies to start exporting raw materials beginning next August.

The US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has authorized several energy companies to export so-called ultra-light oil, as stocks in the United States have increased following the development of shale deposits. Supplies can start as early as August, although initial volumes are likely be small.

Although the US Department of Commerce stressed “the policy on the export of raw materials hasn’t changed”, other market players are also likely to ask the authorities for licenses.

2014 In Review: The Wow And Weird Moments In Business – 31 December 2014

RT logo2014 was a weird financial year. Oil hit a record high and low, economic war erupted over Ukraine, bankers found new tricks to cheat, China’s role significantly increased, and while the US pulled itself out of recession, Europe looks poised to re-enter.

Oil hits high and low

June saw oil prices peak at $116 a barrel, and just six months later they have halved to $60 a barrel. Prices plunged further when OPEC decided to keep production at 30 million barrels per day. Exporters such as Canada, Norway, and Russia have seen their currencies tumble on the back of weaker oil prices.

ZeroHedge – VIX Tops 17 Sparks “Santa-Rally” Negating Sell-Off – 31 December 2014

ZeroHedgeThis is not USDJPY-driven. VIX has diverged (as has HY Credit) for the last 3 days but the push higher in the ‘fear index’ in the last few minutes (with no obvious catalyst) has dragged the S&P lower – erasing (once again) the Santa-Rally gains…

Bitcoin 2.0: Revolution Resumed – 31 December 2014

RT logoPatrick L Young is expert in global financial markets working in multiple disciplines, ranging from trading independently to running exchanges.

Ignore the doomsters: the cryptocurrency revolution is in rude health. Widespread adoption remains a likely outcome.

As 2015 dawns, the bureaucratic blob at the heart of many multinational business entities is feeling smug. Bitcoin, barely above $300, appears a shadow of its one-time booming self. The lure of the million-dollar bitcoin and beyond has become unthinkable as the emerging currency is still recovering from its first bubble.

Once again rumors of the death of cryptocurrency will prove unfounded. In an era where politicians and management consultants alike spout an obsession with ‘innovation,’ alas they tend to turn skeptical as soon as a genuinely new way of doing anything is staring them in the face! With so many analogue legacy stakeholders eager to continue exploiting the currency status quo, unsurprisingly the arrival of a genuinely revolutionary upheaval in money is viewed with suspicion amongst those with so much to lose. Bankers (both central and ‘commercial’), politicians and large corporations tend to regard Bitcoin as a nasty inconvenience to their self-interested pork barrel approach to prosperity.
