Anonymous Now: Million Mask March Descends On London – 4 November 2014

The Million Mask March will course through London on Wednesday November 5. The march, in which all demonstrators obscure their faces to protect their identity, is in protest against austerity, mass surveillance and attacks on human rights.

Organized by the global hacktivist group Anonymous, the London protest will march from Trafalgar Square and finish at the Houses of Parliament.

It is unknown how many demonstrators will join the march, as pleas from police for information have remained unanswered.

The celestial happenings for October included two eclipses, among other astrological alignments, such as Mercury in retrograde, and the biggest solar flares recorded in decades. It’s safe to say that it was a month of immense expansion.

Hungarian Law Gives Green Light To South Stream In Defiance Of EU – 4 November 2014

The Hungarian parliament has approved a law on Monday which allows building the South Stream gas pipeline without approval of the European Union. The European Commission has already demanded an explanation from Hungarian authorities.

The European Commission’s spokesperson said at a press briefing in Brussels on Tuesday that the EC was in contact with Hungarian authorities to get an explanation for their decision.

The law was passed with 132 votes in favor and 35 votes against, allowing a company to construct a gas pipeline even if it doesn’t have the licenses needed to operate it. According to the new law the only requirement for a company which wants to take part in construction is approval from the Hungarian Energy Office.

ECB’s New Watchdog Takes Over EU Banks Supervision – 4 November 2014

The European Central Bank has assumed responsibility for the supervision of euro area banks. From now on its new watchdog will directly supervise 120 “significant banking groups”, which represent 82 percent (by assets) of the euro area banking sector.

It’s hoped that the so-called Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), the Frankfurt-based body, will help “improve and strengthen” financial stability. The aim of the European Central Bank (ECB) supervisor is to boost safety of credit institutions and the stability of the European financial system as a whole.

“We now have a unique opportunity to develop a culture of supervision that is truly European, building on the best practices of supervisors from across the euro area,” the chairperson of the supervisory board of the ECB, Danièle Nouy, said. She revealed that the ECB has hired over 900 banking experts for its new supervisory unit.

$3.8Bn In UK Aid For Developing States ‘Routed Through Tax Havens’ – 4 November 2014

Over two-thirds of investments by the private-sector wing of the UK’s foreign aid program were funneled through tax havens in 2013, a report reveals. Since 2000, the UK government routed in excess of $3.8bn worth of aid through such jurisdictions.

The study, “Going Offshore: How development finance institutions support companies using the world’s most secretive financial centers,” was conducted by the European Network on Debt and Development (Eurodad).

The network is comprised of 48 NGOs from 18 different EU states that campaign on development, tax justice, and other financial issues.

Australia & UK To Jointly Build Ebola Hospital In Sierra Leone – 4 November 2014

ustralia is expected to announce assistance to help contain Ebola in West Africa, including the dispatch of medical volunteers to Sierra Leone.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is facing increasing political pressure from the US and the UK to send teams to West Africa to help contain the outbreak of Ebola.

Abbott has been reluctant to send Australian medics, arguing there is a lack of appropriate treatment facilities and evacuation arrangements for Australians health care workers who might contract the virus.

On Tuesday, Abbott’s office declined to confirm a Fairfax Media report that Australia had finalized a deal with the UK for medical assistance.
