Demilitarized zone, OSCE monitoring Among E.Ukraine Militias’ Peace Proposals – 4 September 2014

The self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have come up with their own proposals to stabilize situation in south-eastern Ukraine, which include temporary ceasefire, 50km demilitarized zone, flight bans for Kiev and OSCE monitoring.

The first and foremost step should be the announcement of a temporary ceasefire by both Ukrainian military and the self-defense forces starting from 15:00 local time (12:00GMT) on September 5, the Donetsk and Lugansk representatives told Interfax news agency.

The leadership of the two republics proposed to “carry out international control of the implementation of the terms of the ceasefire and monitoring of the situation under the authority of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe).”

Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell Found Guilty Of Corruption – 4 September 2014

Robert McDonnell, the former governor of Virginia from 2010 through earlier this year, was found guilty by jury on Thursday of 11 counts involving corrupt conduct carried out while running the state.

Both the ex-governor and his wife, Maureen McDonnell, were indicted earlier this year on multiple counts each of conspiracy, bribery and extortion stemming from accusations that they improperly accepted $177,000 in gifts and cash while in office from vitamin executive Jonnie Williams.

From a federal courthouse in Richmond, VA early Thursday afternoon, a jury convicted Mr. McDonnell on 11 of the 13 counts he faced; his wife was found guilty of nine counts, and both were acquitted on bank fraud charges.

NATO To Give Ukraine 15Mn Euros, Lethal And Non-Lethal Military Supplies From Members – 4 September 2014

NATO has pledged some 15 million euros to Ukraine, with several of the bloc’s member states pledging separate bilateral support and military cooperation, involving medical supplies as well as lethal and nonlethal military equipment.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced a “comprehensive and tailored package of measures” including the donation of 15 million euros “through NATO” at a joint news conference with the Ukrainian president on Thursday on the first day of the NATO summit in Wales.

He said that this would be in addition to other measures such as advising Ukraine on defense reforms and further bilateral aid.

Canadian Beekeepers’ Sting: Pesticide Giants Sued For $450mn Over Bee Deaths – 4 September 2014

Canadian honey producers have filed a class-action lawsuit against Bayer and Syngenta to recover losses dating as far back as 2006, claiming that neonicotinoids they produce and sell are killing bees and cause massive material damage.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of all Canadian beekeepers by honey producers Sun Parlor Honey Ltd. and Munro Honey alleges that Bayer Cropscience Inc. and Syngenta Canada Inc. and their parent companies were negligent in their design, development, sale and distribution of neonicotinoid pesticides, specifically those containing imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiomethoxam, while the defendants “knew or ought to have known at all material times that the neonicotinoids would cause damage to the property of the plaintiffs and the other class members.”

The claim seeks $400 million in compensation for losses and $50 million in punitive damages from Bayer CropScience and Syngenta.

US Judge: BP’s Reckless Conduct Led To 2010 Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill – 4 September 2014

A federal judge on Thursday said oil giant BP acted with gross negligence ahead of the catastrophic 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico, paving the way for the corporation to pay perhaps billions of dollars in fines.

“BP’s conduct was reckless,” United States District Judge Carl Barbier wrote in a decision handed down early Thursday from a federal courthouse in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The four-year-old incident killed 11 people and caused gulf waters that wash onto the shores of five US states to become heavily polluted as oil gushed from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig for a good three months before the flow was brought to a halt. In all, prosecutors said over 4 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf.

‘Losing Momentum’: ECB Cuts Interest Rate To New Record Low Of 0.05% – 4 September 2014

The European Central Bank unexpectedly cut interest rates to 0.05% from 0.15% in a strong response to combat deflation. The move comes as the EU is struggling to boost its stagnating economy, which Draghi

“Growth recovery was losing momentum,” ECB President Mario Draghi said at the news conference after the announcement was made to cut rates further.

The ECB’s main refinancing rate has been cut 10 basis points to 0.05 percent, its marginal lending facility was decreased 10 basis points to 0.3 percent, and its deposit facility decreased 10 basis points to stay in negative territory at -0.2 percent.

“Welfare Not Warfare”: Protesters March On NATO Summit – 4 September 2014

Hundreds of protesters marched from the center of Newport in a show of opposition to the NATO Summit. There are reports of several marches taking place in other Welsh towns.

An estimated 500 NATO opponents made a three-mile trek to the venue in a peaceful protest through Newport. The turnout appears to be well below the 2,500 predicted by organizers.

Chants of “Welfare not warfare” and placards reading ‘Nuclear NATO No Thanks’ and ‘Stop NATO’ were seen and heard amongst the procession, which was followed by two police helicopters.
