Merde! Protesting French Farmers Dump Tons Of Manure At Govt Buildings – 6 November 2014

RT logoDumping some 100 tons of manure and rotten vegetables in Chartres was part of a wave of protest by French farmers, who are angry with overregulation, sluggish economy and lack of protectionism.

France was gripped by a series of protests on Tuesday and Wednesday, with an estimated 36,000 people participating. The dumping of manure in front of a local administration building in Chartres in northern France was mirrored by similar action in the central city of Tours, western Nantes and Toulouse in the southwest.

Who Needs Congress? Washington State Passes Historic Gun Control Measure By Popular Vote – 6 November 2014

RT logoWhile Congress has proven unable to pass universal background checks for gun purchases, a majority of voters in Washington State chose to close a loophole over sales at gun shows. It is the first successful vote for national gun control advocates.

Sixty percent of voters on Tuesday supported gun control measure called Initiative 594, which was designed to close the “gun show loophole.” The measure requires criminal background checks for those purchasing firearms at gun shows or over the internet.

GMO Labeling Efforts Fail In Colorado, Oregon, Succeed In Maui – 6 November 2014

RT logoMaui County, Hawaii, approved a temporary ban on GMO crop cultivation but efforts to label genetically-modified foods at the polls in Colorado and Oregon failed. Millions of dollars were spent backing and opposing the measures.

Squeaking by with just over 1,000 votes, Maui County voters approved a temporary ban on GMO crop cultivation in a 50 to 48 percent vote. The state has become a battleground between biotech firms and food activists – it was the country’s first ever ballot initiative against global agricultural companies like Monsanto and DOW AgroSciences, who spent $8 million trying to defeat the measure.

FBI Wants To Hack Computers Globally, Seeks Search Warrant Expansion – 6 November 2014

RT logoThe Justice Department is looking to remove restrictions on the FBI’s ability to hack into and monitor computer systems everywhere by easing the requirements necessary for it to obtain a search warrant.

Currently, law enforcement agencies can only receive warrants authorizing computer searches if the physical location of the computer in question falls within the corresponding jurisdiction of the judge they are appealing to. If the computer is outside of the judge’s jurisdiction, a warrant is not usually granted.

Now, however, the Justice Department wants to change this limitation, which is called Rule 41. It has asked a judicial advisory committee to allow judges to grant search warrants and permit electronic surveillance regardless of where a computer is located – within or outside of the United States,

London police confirmed ten people were arrested amid sporadic clashes between the Million Mask March protesters and police officers. Authorities said that people were apprehended for assaulting police officers, setting off fireworks, public order offences, obstruction and at least one case of attempted grievous bodily harm.

Czech Nuclear Plant Shuts Down 2 Reactors After Cooling System Leak – 6 November 2014

RT logoThe Dukovany nuclear power plant in the southern Czech Republic has halted operations of two of its reactors after a pipe in the facility’s cooling system started to leak.

The Wednesday shutdown was necessary as the repair was likely to take more than three days, which is allowed under safety regulations, the plant’s operator, Czech electricity company CEZ said.

The leaking in the technical water system, which is used for cooling the important technical and safety devices at the plant, was discovered Monday, the company said.

Reactors 3 and 4 at Dukovany have been stopped, while reactors 1 and 2 will continue working on full capacity, CEZ added.

Texas Votes For George Bush Once Again – 6 November 2014

RT logoGeorge Bush won statewide office in Texas again. But he’s not the former president, and he’s not the governor-elect. George Prescott Bush will become the next state land commissioner after a landslide victory.

Bush won the office with nearly 60 percent of the vote, AFP reported. The Texas land commissioner, “oversees matters that range from state lands and coastal issues to veterans affairs,” according to the official website ‒ including lucrative mineral rights for oil and gas in the state. The money is used to fund public schools in the Lone Star State.

“Our top job here at the General Land Office is to earn money for the school kids of Texas,” outgoing Commissioner Jerry Patterson said in a statement last month, announcing that the oil boom had helped pump a record $1 billion into the fund during fiscal 2014, according to the Texas Tribune.
