UK Rules Out Iraq Ground Troops As Election Looms – 7 January 2015

RT logoHundreds of British soldiers will not be sent to fight jihadi militia groups in Iraq this month due to fears that casualties could cause political damage ahead of the 2015 general election.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Downing Street is said to be worried that British military casualties could influence the overall outcome in May.

Currently there are a small number of British troops training the Iraqi army to combat Islamist fighters, including the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Shangri-La, Bucks & Prostitutes: US Navy Commander Pleads Guilty In Major Bribery Case – 7 January 2015

RT logoA US Navy official admitted on Tuesday to taking various bribes, including a prostitute and luxury travel, as well as sums reaching up to $120,000. He was involved in a massive scheme with a long-term Asian military contractor.

Jose Luis Sanchez, 42, is the highest-ranking official to plead guilty in the case that has investigated the links between a Singapore-based company and US officers, who provided it with confidential information in exchange for luxury travel, prostitutes and other bribes, AP reported on Tuesday.

His 24-page plea agreement lists bribes valued between $30,000 and $120,000 from 2009 to 2013, including a prostitute, $7,500 to travel from Asia to the United States and five days at Singapore’s luxury Shangri-La Hotel. The Navy official is facing a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars.

US Lawyer Sues In Prince Andrew Sex Case, Buckingham Palace Remains Defiant – 7 January 2015

RT logoAn American lawyer accused of having sex with an underage girl in the same case as British Prince Andrew has begun legal action in an attempt to clear his name.

Buckingham Palace remains adamant that the claims surrounding the Prince “lack foundation,” but is refusing to publicly explain the extent or details of the relationship between Andrew and disgraced American tycoon Jeffrey Epstein.

Both the Duke of York (Prince Andrew) and US lawyer Alan Dershowitz have been named in court papers relating to the ongoing case against Epstein, who is alleged to have arranged for underage girls to have sex with his friends and acquaintances.

12 Dead In Shooting At French Satirical Weekly Charlie Hebdo In Paris – 7 January 2015

Twelve people, 10 journalists and two policemen, have been killed, and 10 others wounded in the shooting massacre at the Paris headquarters of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Three of the wounded are in critical condition.

The hooded gunmen stormed the offices at 11.30 am Paris time (10.30 am GMT), reportedly having forced a staff member to open the door at gunpoint.

Brent Oil Collapses Below $50 First Time Since 2009 – 7 January 2015

RT logoBrent crude oil has fallen below $50 per barrel on the London Stock Exchange – the lowest plunge since the dark days of the 2008 financial crisis. So far in 2015 Brent has already lost 10% of its value, after wiping out 50% in 2014.

Brent crude is the European trading benchmark, and is following the spiral trajectory of its US-counterpart WTI, which sunk below $50 per barrel for February contracts on Monday.

30 Killed, 50 Injured In Car Bomb Blast At Yemen Police Academy – 7 January 2015

About 30 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a car blast outside a police college in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, police say.

The victims of the attack are mostly college students and people who came to enroll with the police, witnesses and law enforcers say. They add the blast was heard across the city and a plume of smoke could be seen from a distance.

What happened is we were all gathering and … (the bomber) exploded right next to all of the police college classmates,” eyewitness Jamil al-Khaleedi told AP. “It went off among all of them, and they flew through the air.
